At the recent 2024 World Artificial Intelligence Conference Science Frontier Main Forum, a roundtable discussion was initiated by the Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (Shanghai AI Laboratory), where top scientists from multiple national scientific research platforms gathered together to explore their respective missions and collaborative leadership in the wave of general artificial intelligence. The guests believed that each institution has its own research focus, and a larger plan and platform are needed to integrate their respective advantages and form a synergy.

Assistant Director and Professor of Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory

Qiao Yu

The breakthrough of large models has brought about major changes in the technical route and scientific research methods of artificial intelligence. The highly integrated development of large projects and large innovations has become an important feature. At the same time, artificial intelligence and the real economy are becoming more and more closely integrated, and the close coordination of the innovation chain and the industrial chain will be an important model for future development. The laboratory hopes to play a platform and traction role, coordinate the forces of industry, academia and research, support more and greater innovations, and accelerate artificial intelligence to become the core engine of new quality productivity.

Virtual reality technology and system

Director of National Key Laboratory

Vice President of Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics

Lv Weifeng

Today's scientific research is no longer limited to experimental science and data science, but has become a "construction science" that is constantly evolving. So at this time, we especially need young people to be able to use their intelligence and wisdom. How to inspire young people to do this based on the new generation of computing environment and new generation of data, and carry out imaginative scientific research, I think this is something that no single laboratory can do alone, and we need to work together.

Adjunct Professor at University of Science and Technology of China

Hu Guoping

Humans are able to master many abilities and languages, which are closely related to the knowledge they have learned in the process of interacting with the world. We hope that each laboratory will focus on aspects such as virtual-real integration and embodied intelligence, but there are also larger plans and entities that can integrate everyone's advantages and establish corresponding cooperation. How to integrate specifically requires a more forward-looking and ambitious goal, and effectively promote cooperation through a project system. At the same time, in this process, more young people will join, more public resources will be injected, and they will be fully shared within an appropriate scope, so that more and greater innovations can be effectively supported.

Director of the National Key Laboratory of Multimedia Information Processing

Professor at Peking University

Huang Tiejun

The development of artificial intelligence requires the country to coordinate two major things:

First, we need to build an intelligence infrastructure, just like we build high-speed rail, and build an intelligence operation system. This will allow thousands of households and enterprises to directly obtain intelligence from the infrastructure, just like buying a kilowatt-hour of electricity, and "buy intelligence and use intelligence."

Second, to promote the development of intelligent driving, who will make the model of intelligent driving? The state needs to coordinate. Each of our scientific research platforms is a participant in it. It is normal for there to be competition. No matter who does better, as long as everyone is working towards a common goal, they will not fall apart.

Autonomous Intelligent Unmanned System

Executive Deputy Director of National Key Laboratory

Professor of Beijing Institute of Technology

Sun Jian

Unmanned systems are a multidisciplinary field that requires collaboration among multiple laboratories. I think the leadership of national tasks is particularly important. At present, in many cases, we may still do our own work, and there is a lot of duplication of work, so I hope that the national level will consider the overall situation and propose some major tasks to truly coordinate and lead the key laboratories in several related fields.

The infrastructure of artificial intelligence should be well established so that everyone can use and enjoy it from the industrial chain, supply chain, innovation chain to the talent chain. We must play a role in each field. First, we must integrate scientific research, education, and talent training. Second, we must give full play to everyone's creative role and empower AI technology in different fields, such as manufacturing and transportation application scenarios. Third, I believe that AI should empower the entire education stage and cultivate outstanding innovative talents. Fourth, I believe that people should live a happy and healthy life, and everyone should be healthy, so we must also make efforts in the medical field.

Whether we are making a general-purpose large model or a special-purpose large model, how can we make the model more accurate and better reflect its emergence phenomenon? The model must be made very extreme and very accurate. At the same time, how can we develop it in a coordinated and integrated manner? China has the advantage of a national system. Can we integrate all forces in artificial intelligence research and form a chain of our laboratories, national technology innovation engineering centers, etc.? Secondly, can we deeply integrate the innovation of artificial intelligence with industrial innovation and make it truly an important engine for the development of new quality productivity?
