kuai technology news on october 3, it is reported that as the european union is about to vote on china’s electric vehicle tariff plan, bmw has joined other german automakers in urging germany to vote against it.

bmw ceo oliver zipse said in a statement on wednesday, imposing additional tariffs will only harm companies doing business around the world and could trigger a trade dispute that benefits no one. the german government should take a clear stance.

it is reported that eu member states are preparing to convene 27 member states to vote on october 4 to decide whether to extend the current temporary tariffs into permanent tariffs for at least five years.

if the tariff is to be blocked, 15 member states (accounting for 65% of the eu population) will need to vote against it.otherwise, the eu will impose additional tariffs ranging from 7.8% to 35.3% on electric vehicles imported from china on top of the 10% standard car import tariff.

however, there are also differences within the eu on the issue of this tariff increase. countries such as germany and spain have warned against imposing additional tariffs because it may trigger a "trade war"; however, countries such as italy and denmark support this measure.

among them, german automakers have generally rejected the tariffs, saying they could threaten sales in china, their largest auto market, if china takes countermeasures.

mercedes-benz ceo källenius has been calling for market openings over the past few months, and volkswagen group ceo oliver blum has repeatedly expressed concern about a potential trade dispute with china.
