it house reported on september 30 that south korea's hyundai motor group announced that hyundai motor and kia motors will jointly develop a lithium iron phosphate (lfp) battery cathode material production technology development project.
hyundai motor group wrote in an official press release that the lfp battery cathode material development project is promoted by hyundai motor, kia motors, hyundai steel and ecopro bm, a leading company in the cathode material market, with the purpose of not manufacturing precursors. in this case, materials are directly synthesized to produce lfp battery cathode materials.the project lasts four years, has received support from the ministry of trade, industry and energy of south korea.
soonjoon jung, head of electrification and electric drive materials r&d at hyundai motor and kia motors, said: "to meet the needs of the future electric vehicle market, rapid technology development and effective battery supply chain construction are essential. we aim to achieve this through project to reduce dependence on imported products and improve the technological competitiveness of the country and hyundai motor group through in-house development of necessary technologies.”
according to reports, traditional lfp battery cathode materials are produced by adding lithium to precursor materials such as phosphate and iron sulfate. in the direct synthesis process, phosphate, iron powder and lithium will be added simultaneously without producing separate precursors. this eliminates the precursor production step, reduced harmful emissions during manufacturing and lowered production costs。
it house noted that hyundai motor said this cooperation is of great significance because it links the steel, battery and automotive industries.
