on september 26, the state council information office held a series of press conferences on "promoting high-quality development".
in response to the recent adjustments to undergraduate majors at some universities, wu yan, vice minister of the ministry of education, said, "talent cultivation is the foundation, and undergraduate education is the root" and "if the undergraduate foundation is not solid, the whole building will be shaken." this shows that undergraduate education plays an irreplaceable and important fundamental role in higher education.
"there are currently 1,308 undergraduate colleges and universities in the country, with undergraduate majors in 12 categories, 93 professional categories, and 816 majors, totaling 62,000 undergraduate majors nationwide. since the 18th national congress of the communist party of china, we have accelerated the adjustment and optimization of the professional structure. i would like to share two data with you: over the past 12 years, we have added 21,000 undergraduate majors and rescinded or stopped recruiting 12,000 majors that were not suitable for economic and social development. we have carried out a sufficient number and forceful adjustment of the discipline and professional structure. this year, we have added 1,673 majors that are urgently needed for national strategies and rescinded 1,670 majors that were not suitable for economic and social development. the intensity of the adjustment can be said to be unprecedented," said wu yan.
wu yan revealed that the next step will be to dynamically adjust the requirements of disciplines and majors. first, we need to improve the adaptability of undergraduate major construction to the urgent needs of national strategies. second, we need to improve the adaptability of major construction in colleges and universities, especially local colleges and universities, to regional development. third, we need to improve the adaptability of undergraduate major construction to the all-round development of students.
