this year marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the national people's congress. ong tee keat, chairman of the malaysia asia-pacific "belt and road" co-planning committee, wrote in china daily on september 14 that as china's highest state power organ, the national people's congress has made extraordinary achievements, while meeting the people's growing needs for a better life, and constantly promoting national development to a new level.

whole-process people's democracy is effective
the article points out that china's political system is effective, and the elimination of absolute poverty is a strong proof of this. in more than 40 years, china has lifted more than 800 million people out of absolute poverty, achieving the poverty reduction target of the united nations 2030 agenda for sustainable development 10 years ahead of schedule, demonstrating the communist party of china's determination to serve the people wholeheartedly.
in july 2020, the ash center for democratic governance and innovation at harvard kennedy school of government released a report titled "understanding the resilience of the chinese communist party: a long-term survey of chinese public opinion," which showed that the chinese people's satisfaction with the central government exceeded 93%. this disproves the "rubber stamp" rumor fabricated by the west.
from the election of deputies to the national people's congress at all levels, to reflecting people's needs in policy making, to supervising government administration, the chinese people fully participate in national governance, and the entire process demonstrates the people-oriented approach. this is the uniqueness of full-process people's democracy.
in essence, whole-process people's democracy is a result-oriented decision-making model, and its evaluation criteria should be the government's ability to achieve high-quality development, improve people's well-being, and improve living standards, rather than whether it implements a multi-party election system. this is in stark contrast to western democracy, which only allows voters to play a limited role in electing representatives, and western voters never have a say in policy making.
western-style democracy lacks inclusiveness
the article further stated that the west calls the governance model that does not implement a multi-party electoral system "authoritarian rule" and regards china as a "thorn in the eye."
unfortunately, western ideologues do not seem to understand that the principle of "majority rule" defended by liberal democrats does not leave any room for the minority. in the final analysis, the decision-making results in the west are "winner takes all". worse, this tyranny of the majority often runs rampant.
from the perspective of western democracy, a multi-party electoral system is a prerequisite for the formation of a "checks and balances" mechanism. in fact, this "checks and balances" is not unique to the west. china's political consultation system is a system of checks and balances, which regards the democratic parties as negotiating partners of the ruling communist party rather than opponents. in contrast, western democracy lacks this inclusiveness.
at the same time, china's governance achievements fully demonstrate the feasibility of its governance model. it is well known that an "authoritarian government" cannot achieve extraordinary achievements, such as turning a poor and backward agricultural society into an economic power. if china were not a rapidly rising economy, it would not be labeled as a "systemic challenger" that threatens the dominance of the united states in all aspects, and the west, led by the united states, would not hinder china's development at all costs.
for a long time, the united states has strengthened its extraterritorial intervention through "long-arm jurisdiction" and carried out "regime change" in the name of promoting "democracy". ironically, the us national debt continues to soar and social ills are becoming more serious. the us congress is condescending and pointing fingers at other countries, but is powerless to ease tensions. even more regrettable is that the us congress recently passed a series of anti-china bills.
the article concludes by emphasizing that today, the people's congress system still maintains vigor and vitality. various arguments that speak ill of china may stir up waves in the international media, but they cannot stop china's rise. after all, facts speak louder than words.
