on september 3, the person involved, nian hongli, told jimu news that she was from jinan, shandong province, and was admitted to the school of physical education of hebei normal university in 2016 to pursue a doctorate in sports education and training. there was also an international student studying for a doctorate in the same major as her.

nian hongli said that because the student's chinese proficiency was poor, she began to help the student complete his graduation thesis in 2019 at the instruction of the college and tutor. when she took over, the student's thesis was written in his native language and then converted into chinese using translation software, which did not meet the requirements of a graduation thesis.

"so, i and several other masters spent a lot of energy to help the international students write." nian hongli said that she also needed to work on her own thesis at the time and was not willing to do this job. but she was worried that if she refused the teacher, it would affect her graduation, so she had to agree.

the chat records provided by nian hongli show that in march 2019, she and several classmates helped the above-mentioned international student to revise and write the thesis. after the thesis was completed, a teacher in the group encouraged them to help the thesis reduce the plagiarism rate. at the end of 2022, the international student completed the thesis defense.

however, nian hongli herself has never received a doctoral degree certificate. according to the official website of the graduate school of hebei normal university, nian hongli and the above-mentioned international students both defended their dissertations on the afternoon of december 6, 2022. however, the international students' defense was scheduled as "doctoral dissertation defense", while nian hongli's defense was scheduled as "doctoral dissertation defense".

nian hongli said that both of them defended their graduation thesis, and she didn't understand why the two had different defense names. nian hongli also said that before the defense, she did receive a written reply from the college without an official seal and dated november 18, 2022: "according to the passing standards of the doctoral dissertation of the institute of physical education, the review result of nian hongli's degree thesis was not passed, so she could not participate in the degree thesis defense, but could conduct the doctoral graduation defense." after that, after her efforts, the college agreed to let her defend the thesis. but she didn't expect that after the defense, the school did not issue her a degree certificate.

on september 3, staff from multiple departments of hebei normal university told jimu news that they were aware of the incident and that the matter was being handled by the university's publicity department, but that they did not yet know the specific outcome. the reporter called the university's publicity department several times, but no one answered.

relevant staff of the hebei provincial department of education told reporters that they had received nian hongli's complaint about the incident and contacted the school to investigate. according to their understanding, the results of the investigation have been fed back to the school and the parties involved, and the specific situation needs to be consulted with the school.
