driving industrial innovation with scientific and technological innovation is an important path for new productivity to empower strategic emerging industries, and the key to achieving this lies in talent. during the 2024 pujiang innovation forum, the first shanghai international computational biology innovation competition, which lasted for more than 9 months, was officially announced to be concluded at the shanghai international computational biology innovation forum and an award ceremony was held. in the final held on site, 5 teams staged a "peak showdown". the winners were finally selected based on the comprehensive scoring of wet experiment scores, the quality of the final on-site defense report, the modeling exploration process, and the innovation of the modeling solution.
the nmda receptor is associated with a variety of diseases, such as stroke, depression, epilepsy, alzheimer's disease, pain, etc. it is one of the most popular drug development targets for neurological diseases. the development of drugs targeting the nmda receptor has important clinical significance and therapeutic market. based on the known protein sequence, structure and active molecule information of the nmda receptor family, the competition uses ai calculation methods to discover potential highly active molecules that specifically act on the glun1/glun3a receptor. combined with wet experimental verification, it lays an important foundation for further drug development, and enables truly valuable and robust ai algorithms to emerge, promoting ai drug development.
today, artificial intelligence technologies such as deep learning are playing an increasingly important role in the field of new drug discovery. in may last year, the shanghai science and technology commission issued the "shanghai computational biology innovation and development action plan (2023-2025)" to promote the development of computational biology and enable the solution of key scientific research problems, drug development and major disease prevention and treatment problems.
the plan systematically arranges basic research and applied basic research such as algorithm development, model construction, and ai drug design by establishing special support, building an innovation platform system, linking industrial development, and strengthening talent introduction and cultivation. it plans to establish a computational biology research paradigm based on the entire chain of modeling, prediction, and application by 2025, initially build infrastructure such as biological big data platforms, cultivate and introduce a group of computational biology talents, take the lead in achieving major theoretical breakthroughs in the fields of multimodal data theory algorithms, protein engineering, and ai drug research and development, develop a group of algorithm models and software with independent intellectual property rights and international influence, accelerate the birth of a group of disruptive technologies for life and health, and produce a group of new tools, new standards, and new products that can be effectively applied on a large scale, laying the foundation for forming a dominant discipline in the field of computational biology and making shanghai a source of innovative ideas, scientific research paradigms, and major applications in the field of computational biology.
as an important measure to connect industrial development, the 2023 shanghai international computational biology innovation competition, hosted by the shanghai biomedical science and technology industry promotion center, was officially launched in december last year. according to the organizers, this competition adheres to the principle of "selecting people by competition and selecting options by competition". in addition to receiving prize money, the winners and eligible teams will be directly included in the "computational biology" special project of the shanghai science and technology commission's science and technology innovation action plan for follow-up support. according to the shanghai biomedical science and technology development center, the competition attracted 342 teams with a total of 1,329 people to sign up, and a total of 180 program abstracts were submitted. after the first round of review, 86 teams were shortlisted for the preliminary round, including 60 teams from universities, accounting for about 70%; and 28 teams from shanghai, accounting for about 30%.
