phoenix.com technology news beijing time september 5, bmw said on thursday that it will jointly develophydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (fcev), and mass production in 2028. bmw plans to start selling hydrogen-powered cars in 2028 as an alternative to electric cars.

bmw ix5 hydrogen concept

although bmw has been pursuing this technology for many years, high costs and lack of hydrogen refueling infrastructure have always been two major problems restricting the popularization of this technology.currently, there are only a few hydrogen-powered models available on the market, such as the toyota mirai and hyundai nexo. according to bloomberg new energy finance, global sales of hydrogen-powered vehicles were only 9,000 last year.

fuel cell supporters point out that the advantage of fuel cells is their ultra-long driving range, especially in areas where charging facilities are not yet well-developed, and fuel cell vehicles can serve as an effective supplement to electric vehicles during the transition period. the technology generates electricity by burning hydrogen, and the only emission is water.

on september 3, bmw group and toyota motor corporation signed a memorandum of understanding (mou) on comprehensive cooperation in fuel cell technology. based on the results of the cooperation, bmw will launch fuel cell vehicle products with brand characteristics; in addition, the two parties will also effectively reduce the overall cost of fuel cell technology through cooperation, thereby promoting the popularity of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles in the market.

it is worth mentioning that bmw has been operating a small test fleet of hydrogen-powered ix5 suvs to collect actual road usage data since 2023. the company's ceo oliver zipse has previously revealed that hydrogen power is expected to become an important option in bmw's "neue klasse" electric vehicle series to be launched next year.

it is reported that, bmw ix5 hydrogen fuel cell vehicle has now completed the production-level testing process, including complete simulation and collision tests, laboratory tests of individual components, and vehicle tests in closed venues. even in the extremely low temperature environment of the arctic circle or the high temperature desert road conditions of 45°c, the vehicle's fuel cell drive system still performs very well.
