Recently, the rise in vegetable prices has attracted the attention of citizens. How can Beijing ensure its vegetable supply? The reporter learned from the Beijing Municipal Development and Reform Commission that as the impact of the weather gradually weakened, the city took multiple measures to actively organize the supply of goods. Under the condition of sufficient market supply, the wholesale price of vegetables has shown a downward trend since August 15, and the wholesale price on the 18th fell by 1.66% month-on-month.
Why are vegetable prices rising? The main reason is unfavorable weather
Since late July, high temperatures and heavy rainfall have occurred in many parts of the country, affecting the growth, harvesting, storage, and transportation of vegetables, and wholesale and retail prices have continued to rise. According to relevant statistics, on August 18, the supply of vegetables in Beijing's wholesale market was 28,600 tons, an increase of 7.92% from the beginning of the month (26,500 tons) and a year-on-year increase of 17.21%; the wholesale price of vegetables, the retail price of community vegetable stores, and the retail price of chain supermarkets were 1.78 yuan, 3.57 yuan, and 4.52 yuan per catty, respectively. The wholesale prices of 25 kinds of vegetables rose by 21 and fell by 4 compared with the beginning of the month.
Why do vegetable prices rise in the summer when fruits and vegetables are in season? According to relevant industry insiders, unfavorable weather is the main reason for the recent continuous rise in vegetable prices. Continuous rainfall and high temperatures are not conducive to vegetable production. Vegetable growth slows down, diseases are more common, and overall production has decreased significantly, leading to continued high prices. Some vegetables have a "gap" phenomenon due to the extended crop rotation period, which has driven up overall prices.
In addition, frequent rainfall has made it more difficult to harvest vegetables. At the same time, the high temperature and high humidity have increased the rotting of vegetables, resulting in a significant increase in labor costs, storage costs and transportation costs, which has further pushed up vegetable prices. The national vegetable supply capacity has declined, especially the increase in demand for northern vegetables in the south, which has also pushed up prices in major production areas.
How to ensure the citizens' food supply? Ensure supply and promote price stability
According to the relevant person in charge of Beijing Municipal Development and Reform Commission, Beijing has taken multiple measures to actively organize the supply of vegetables to deal with the problem of declining supply levels in the production links of vegetable production areas and ensure that the market supply remains sufficient. In response to the impact of heavy rainfall, hot and humid weather on the supply and prices of important livelihood commodities such as vegetables, Beijing has deployed in advance to strengthen the response to extreme weather, and made every effort to ensure supply and price stability to ensure the bottom line of people's livelihood.
In order to ensure the supply of vegetables, at the wholesale end, Beijing coordinated with major wholesale markets such as Xinfadi, organized merchants in the market to further expand supply channels, coordinated with alternative production areas for some high-priced vegetable varieties, and strengthened the organization and transportation of goods; at the retail end, the city organized large chain supermarkets and direct-operated and direct-supply enterprises to increase direct purchases from bases and increase the supply of corresponding categories of vegetables; at the same time, it coordinated with vegetable bases in other provinces and cities to increase the supply of tomatoes, cucumbers and other vegetables in Beijing. At the same time, make preparations for emergency transportation of government reserves, strengthen inspections of government reserves such as daily necessities, ensure that the number of reserved commodities is in place, and make preparations for emergency transportation to ensure that government reserves can be "adjusted and used" in emergency situations.
While stabilizing the supply, the city strengthened monitoring, early warning and market supervision, closely tracked the supply and price changes of grain, oil, meat, eggs and vegetables in the market, insisted on daily monitoring and daily reporting, and promptly launched price emergency monitoring and market inspections to achieve early detection, early reporting and early disposal; strengthened market supervision, organized price supervision and inspection of large wholesale markets, chain supermarkets, community vegetable stores and other vegetable wholesale and retail units, quickly verified clues to vegetable price problems reported by the masses, and strictly investigated price fraud, price gouging and other unfair price behaviors in accordance with the law to ensure the stability and order of the market for important people's livelihood commodities in the capital.
The Beijing Development and Reform Commission also reminded citizens that recently, the main vegetable producing areas for Beijing are still in the late rainy season, and the impact of adverse weather on vegetable production still has a lag period. However, with the implementation of measures to ensure supply and stabilize prices, the supply of vegetables on the market remains sufficient and stable. It is expected that after the end of the "dog days", the supply level of vegetables will further increase, and prices will gradually fall back and return to normal levels.
