Lin Qingxuan wrote in "The Most Beautiful Thing in Life is Pure Joy":
Look at the world with a pure heart and live life with joy.
Create affection with an ordinary mind, and remove worries with a soft heart.
The environment is created by the mind. The difference between good and bad circumstances is not the coordinates of a person's birth, but the result of the acquired mind cultivation. It is better to start from the "heart" when cultivating life.
01 Slow down to maintain stability
Slow down and think twice before you act. A person's self-cultivation is also reflected in his slowness, both in words and actions. If you speak slowly, you will be more careful with your words; if you behave slowly, you can be self-disciplined.
There is an ancient couplet:
When you are furious, slow down for a moment and wait until your mood is calm, so you can avoid endless worries; when facing a very difficult matter, think quietly about the whole story and wait until your mind is focused, then you will naturally be able to make a decision.
Calm your mind and be indifferent to the changes of the world. "Don't worry about having no friends on the road ahead", slow down and walk through life more excitingly.
02 Retreat to cultivate “thickness”
Standing in front of others often makes people jealous, and the tree that stands out in the forest will be destroyed by the wind. There are some things that don't need to be calculated, time will prove everything; there are some people that don't need to be cared about, people with different ideals cannot make plans together. To give in is not cowardice, but leaving room for maneuver; to give in is not incompetence, but magnanimity, forgive others when you can.
Budai Monk once said:
Planting the fields with green seedlings, looking down, you can see the sky in the water. Only when the six senses are pure and quiet can you achieve the Tao. Taking a step back is actually moving forward.
Just like planting rice in a paddy field, "stepping back" is the way forward. Knowing how to give in is a kind of kindness and wisdom. It is better to give in a little when dealing with others, and to give in three points when you are right; being lenient to others is a blessing, and kind people are blessed.
03 Giving to Cultivate Kindness
There are more than 2,000 parking spaces at Volvo's headquarters in Sweden. People who arrive early always park their cars far away from the office building, and this happens every day.
Someone asked in confusion: "Are your parking spaces fixed?" They replied: "We arrived early and have time to walk more. Colleagues who arrive later may be late and need to park closer to the office building."
Giving up is a kind of benevolent virtue, and it is also a state of life. Only by giving up can you gain. If you give up hypocrisy, you will gain sincerity; if you give up boredom, you will gain fulfillment; if you give up impetuousness, you will gain steadiness; if you give up utilitarianism, you can return to a simple life.
To cultivate compassion, you must first warm your heart. How to warm it? Read books of love, do loving things, and be with loving people.
04 Keep quiet to maintain “purity”
Be indifferent in a busy place, and cultivate your mind in a quiet place. People need inner peace and concentration to cultivate a pure mind. If you don't see, hear, or think about the right and wrong, you can have a peaceful mind.
The human heart is often full of desires and cannot be calmed down, just like turbid water. Desires are the boiling water in the pot, and the human heart is the tea in the cup. The water boils because of the heat of the fire, and the heart is calm because of the coolness of the cup.
When desires meet coolness, they calm down and settle in the heart, just like muddy water turning clear. To be quiet is not to avoid the hustle and bustle of traffic, but to build a fence in the heart. To be quiet is not to be deaf to the world, but to be able to smile at the autumn moon and spring breeze even when you are burdened with heavy responsibilities.
On a spring afternoon, brew a cup of tea, sit in a rocking chair, and rock quietly. Let all the distracting thoughts in your heart drift to the unreachable river of oblivion, and return a peaceful and pure heart, free from worries and anger in the years. A person lives a lifetime to cultivate his mind; a person lives a lifetime to cultivate his mind. When the heart is free, life is free.
