Viggo Johansen (1851-1935), a shining star in the Danish art world, is not only an indispensable soul of the Skagen painters group, but every summer they gather like migratory birds in the northern corner of the Jutland Peninsula to paint the grand scene of art. In the Danish art world at the end of the 19th century, Johansen, with his outstanding talent, ranked among the most outstanding painters, and his artistic achievements, like shining stars, illuminated the art sky of that era.
From an early age, Johansen showed an extraordinary sensitivity to color and lines. This talent was like an uncut gem, which was cherished by the discerning Willem Marstrand. From 1868 to 1875, he worked hard at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, specializing in figure painting. Although he did not graduate, he had already honed his solid skills and unique artistic perspective.

The landscape of Hornbeek became the starting point of his artistic journey. Between 1872 and 1876, the warmth of Et Maaltid and the tranquility of Nabokonens Besøg, like newly blossoming flowers, foreshadowed the vigorous vitality of his artistic life. Inspired by his classmates Carl Madsen and Michael Ancher, he first joined the ranks of Skagen painters in 1875. From then on, his artistic path was closely connected with this land, painting the splendor of the years together.
From 1885, the art feast of Paris opened its arms to him. There, Claude Monet's color magic deeply touched him, especially the exquisite use of light and color, such as in "Christian Bindslev er syg", the light and shadow on the sickbed intertwined, as if Monet's brushstrokes had planted a new color concept in his heart. After returning from Paris, his canvases flowed with softer and richer tones, like the fountain of inspiration of French artists, washing away his early dullness and giving new life to his works.

However, what Johansen is most praised for is the soft and warm interior scenes he painted. Whether it is the Christmas joy in "Glade jul", the quiet time of evening conversation in "Aftenpassiar", or the warm gathering of artists' homes in "Aftenselskab i kunstnerens hjem", he captures those fleeting tender moments in life with delicate brushstrokes, making the viewer feel as if they are under the soft light and feel the tranquility and beauty.

In addition, Johansen's artistic exploration does not stop indoors. The magnificent scenery of Skagen, the tranquil scenery of Tisveld, and the fishing port of Drag in his childhood memories have all become the protagonists of his landscape paintings. Still life and portraits are also treasures in his art world, and each stroke contains his deep insight into and infinite love for life.
From 1888 to 1920, he not only taught at the Girls' School of the Artists' Academy, but was also promoted to professor and served as a director for a time, contributing his own efforts to cultivating a new generation of artists. In another world of life, his marriage to Martha Mueller has created an artistic legend. Martha is not only his partner in life, but also a frequent guest on his canvases, such as the kitchen corner in "Køkkeninteriør", the quiet bedroom in "Sovekammerscene", and the innocence of children in "Børnene vaskes", all of which left her as a model.
