Sandra BellmanSandra Bierman (1938-) is an intuitive American painter. She emphasizes the importance of intuition in her creative process and does not use models or photographs in order to maintain the spontaneity and originality of her works.
Although her painting style is close to abstraction, it also incorporates figurative elements, especially the use of human figures. Her works often depict down-to-earth, maternal female figures, which are often a reflection of her personal life experiences, such as holding a child, being with a cat, or washing her hair in the rain. Her works also reflect the exploration of male figures.
Sandra is deliberate in her use of technique and composition, but her unconscious mind adds an inner desire for tranquility, strength and happiness to her work. She sometimes exaggerates or distorts shapes and lines in order to emphasize important elements of her work. She believes it is best to let the vision guide the creative process rather than directing it herself.
She notes that a visit to Kauai had an impact on her palette, which could mean that her choice and use of color is influenced by a specific environment or culture.
Sandra Behrman has received numerous awards and recognitions, including the 1998 Colorado Governor's Invitational Purchase Award, the 1995 Medal of Honor at the 67th American Artists' Professional League Exhibition (First Prize in Oil Painting), and was a Louie Awards International Finalist in 1995 and 1996. Her work has been shown in numerous exhibitions, including a 2000 retrospective at the Bakersfield Museum of Art in California, and at the Blue Rain Gallery in Taos, New Mexico.
Additionally, Sandra Behrman’s work has been featured in numerous magazines and publications, including Southwest Art, Radioactive Magazine, Woman’s Magazine, Mountain Living, ARTnews, American Art Magazine, etc. Her work has also been used for magazine covers and editorial purposes, as well as copyrighted for greeting cards and prints by several publishers.
