This year's training did not trip me up on the same "stone"
■ Xie Xiao Zhang Ping People's Liberation Army Daily reporter Han Cheng
On September 1, 2023, this edition published a report on the wireless radio squad of a battalion of a brigade of the 82nd Group Army.
In the early autumn desert, the strong wind blew up the yellow sand, making it impossible to open your eyes. In the radio station, the special situations that came one after another were as unpredictable as the weather here. Zhou Liang, the squad leader of the wireless radio squad of a battalion of a brigade of the 82nd Army and a first-class sergeant, once again stepped into this familiar yet unfamiliar "examination room" with only one goal in mind: to win a "turnaround battle".
On this day, the brigade organized a comprehensive assessment for the wireless radio class. In addition to the bad and changeable weather, the lessons of last year also reminded Zhou Liang that it is not easy to pass the assessment and get good results.
Last year, around the same time, in the same desert, Zhou Liang's radio squad ignored the interference of high-voltage towers and suffered signal transmission interruption, which affected the progress of the exercise. At that time, Zhou Liang was a veteran in the squad. At the critical moment, he accurately identified the source of electromagnetic interference and helped the whole squad out of trouble. At the end of last year, Zhou Liang took over as squad leader. During this year's field training, he wanted to use his outstanding performance to restore the reputation of the radio squad.
"The position is exposed, and the command post will be covered by 'enemy' firepower." The teams entered the assessment area in the yellow sand, and just as they deployed their equipment, they received a special situation report.
"Move quickly!" Zhou Liang made a decisive decision and led the whole class to complete the withdrawal of the radio station. He also adopted a dispersed breakout method and rushed out of the "enemy" fire coverage area without any danger.
Zhou Liang's nerves did not relax at all after the "first victory", because this assessment was different from the previous ones. According to him, the brigade explored and launched a new assessment model of "rolling up the content, form and difficulty year by year according to actual combat standards". For the wireless radio class, it is no longer a simple test of whether the command transmission is fast and accurate, but a combination of multiple capability indicators. What to test and how to test are still unknown.
As they were talking, several special situations came one after another, such as "No. 3 radio operator had an 'open fracture' in his left leg" and "attacked by a small group of 'enemy agents'". Zhou Liang responded quickly and responded to each situation. While organizing the treatment of the wounded, he arranged for personnel to set up a fake radio station to conceal the truth and show the false. At the same time, he designated a warning direction for each person, and finally escaped successfully.
The reporter learned that after the field training last year, the wireless radio class carefully learned lessons and deeply reflected on the gap between their training level and actual combat. In response to the problems found, they used complex weather and electromagnetic interference environments to practice battlefield situation analysis and "zero error" command transmission capabilities. After Zhou Liang became the squad leader, he carefully analyzed everyone's shortcomings and weaknesses, and formulated a training plan for everyone according to the outline. Whenever there was an opportunity, he led everyone to participate in competitions and combat readiness support tasks. After a year of hard work, the entire class not only significantly enhanced their awareness of actual combat, but also greatly improved their professional capabilities.
The assessment is still going on. After arriving at the reserve position, Zhou Liang immediately organized his comrades to set up a radio station. After a while, the transmission signal was suddenly interrupted - it was a familiar scene again, the situation encountered during the field training last year appeared again.
"It's electromagnetic interference. Everyone should deal with it according to the plan!" Zhou Liang made a prompt decision.
However, detection revealed that the electromagnetic interference was extremely complex. Not only was it strong, but it also came from a wide range of sources. They tried various methods to restore communications, but all failed.
"Are we going to be tripped by the same 'stone' twice?" For a moment, everyone panicked, the atmosphere on the scene suddenly became tense, and beads of sweat appeared on Zhou Liang's forehead.
"There's no need to guard the radio station, the key is to find a way to pass the order." Suddenly, Zhou Liang's eyes lit up: give up radio communication and use other simple means. In the end, the wireless communication team successfully passed the superior's order using flag signals.
The results were announced, and Zhou Liang's class won first place in the comprehensive assessment due to its flexible use of tactics and strategies and fast and accurate command transmission.
Looking at the report card, the brigade leader was pleased: "Field training is carried out every year, and there should be new progress every year. When problems are found, they should be solved as soon as possible, and the same mistakes should not be repeated."
Reporters' comments
Don’t let the problem “remain”

Actual combat training is an effective way to promote the coupling of combat and training. The growth experience of Zhou Liang, the squad leader of the wireless radio squad of a battalion of a brigade of the 82nd Army, and his comrades showed us the gratifying changes of frontline officers and soldiers in learning lessons, summing up experience, and learning to fight in training missions. At the same time, it also brings us a "question of deep reflection": How many problems are still "unchanged" after years of field training?
The process of discovering and solving problems is the process of filling in the gaps and improving capabilities. Looking at the training grounds today, many officers and soldiers can achieve "fighting one battle and making progress" in reflection and rectification, just like Zhou Liang's team, but there are also some units and a few officers and soldiers who do not pay enough attention to the review and summary of the training, or habitually organize the exposed problems into tables, summarize them in notebooks and put them aside, or turn a blind eye to the problems, do not take the initiative to seek solutions, or treat big problems as small problems and use old methods to deal with new problems, so that some problems are unresolved and delayed for a long time, becoming a bottleneck restricting the improvement of combat effectiveness.
In recent years, with the deepening of actual combat training, it is inevitable that some new problems will arise. The most fearful thing is that we will find problems but fail to solve them. We often criticize the phenomenon of "training and exercise every year is the same every year" and "combat effectiveness has been hovering at a low level for a long time". The reasons are closely related to this.
If we compare actual combat training to a marathon, then the problem is the sand in the athlete's shoes. Whoever cleans it up in a timely and thorough manner can run faster and farther. In this process, every soldier must dare to expose problems, dare to solve difficult problems, and form a strong joint force for collective wisdom and attack; Party organizations and trainers at all levels should take the initiative to shoulder responsibilities, adhere to problem orientation, strengthen result orientation, and always maintain the tenacity and perseverance of "not letting go until zero is cleared". When a problem is found, it will be solved. When a shortcoming is exposed, it will be filled. It must not be ignored and the tumor will be nurtured. At the same time, strengthen classified guidance, follow the principle of "whoever has the problem should solve it", clarify the division of responsibilities and rectification time limit, and prevent the situation of "checking problems and shirking each other's responsibility to solve problems". In particular, leading organs at all levels must admit their mistakes and make corrections immediately. It should be known that many problems occur at the grassroots level, but the grassroots are unable to solve them.
