When youth meets "olive green"
——Observations from the 9th National Student Military Training Camp
■ Liberation Army Daily reporters Liang Jinfeng, Lu Dongfang and Zhang Hongyuan
The team performing enemy-capturing tactics had sharp eyes and every move was in place; the team performing assassination exercises had agile bodies and sharp movements... On August 8, at the training ground of the Armed Police Engineering University, the 9th National Student Military Training Camp came to a conclusion with a training results report performance.
This military training camp was jointly sponsored by the Ministry of Education and the National Defense Mobilization Department of the Central Military Commission and held by the Armed Police Engineering University, with the theme of "Walking into the Olive Green and Inspiring Youth Dreams". Since July 26, more than 760 student representatives from 31 provinces (autonomous regions, municipalities) and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps have gathered in the ancient city of Xi'an to participate in theoretical learning, skill training, observation and experience, competitions and other activities to experience military camp life and cultivate patriotism.
What kind of sparks will be created when youth meets "olive green"? Let us walk into this military training camp and witness the gains and growth of young students.

A tearful photo
Red stories touch the heart
Gao Lei, a sophomore student at Lhasa Teachers College, has a photo saved on her phone - in the photo, she looks focused, her chin slightly raised, and tears in the corners of her eyes. The photo was taken on July 30, 2024, in the lecture hall of the Armed Police Engineering University.
At that time, the lecture hall was performing the Armed Police Force's literary and artistic scenario class "Red Shoulderbands". The scenario class told the following story: The emergency assembly whistle suddenly sounded, and heavy rain hit the mountainous area. The officers and soldiers of the Armed Police Force rushed to the rescue upon hearing the order. In order to rescue an elderly man who fell into the water, Sun Mingli jumped into the turbulent torrent. The old man was rescued, but he disappeared in the flood...
"My father once served in the armed police force. He was very busy and rarely spent time at home." Gao Lei used to complain about her father. When she saw Sun Mingli bravely saving people regardless of his own safety, she understood the mission and responsibility on her father's shoulders, and tears moistened her eyes. This scene was captured by Li Zhi, an officer of the Political Work Department of the Armed Police Engineering University. "Many classmates cried at the time. Everyone was very engaged in watching and the response was strong." Li Zhi said.
"'Red shoulder straps' are a distinctive mark of the armed police force and an important symbol of loyal guards. The four stories told in the situational lessons are fascinating, and the actors' performances are very contagious, making the audience feel involved." Zhang Lin, deputy leader of the comprehensive planning group of the military training camp, introduced that red is the spiritual background color of the people's army. This training camp has arranged six lectures on ideals and beliefs, the Yan'an spirit, the spirit of resisting U.S. aggression and aiding Korea, etc., and carried out on-site teaching with the help of Shaanxi's rich red resources to enhance the students' understanding of the people's army.
"Under the guidance of the Yan'an spirit, countless Communists put the country first, put the people first, sacrifice their own families for the sake of the public, and interpret the profound connotation of family and country feelings with practical actions." Bi Yuanning, director of the Yan'an Spirit Research Center of the Party School of the CPC Shaanxi Provincial Committee (Shaanxi Administrative College), gave a wonderful theoretical class on the theme of Yan'an spirit.
"I used to think that the Yan'an spirit was very abstract, but after listening to the examples told by the teacher, especially the stories about the Nanniwan mass production and burning charcoal in the cave dwellings, I have a better understanding of self-reliance and hard work." Tian Zihan, a student from the No. 1 Middle School in Tongchuan City, Shaanxi Province, said that her hometown is close to Yan'an, and in the future she will take the stories told by the teacher to Nanniwan and the cave dwellings to experience the Yan'an spirit firsthand.
"Spirit is invisible and intangible, and is often hidden in the profound historical facts and specific revolutionary relics." Zhang Lin introduced that Shaanxi is the foothold of the Red Army's Long March and the birthplace of the Yan'an spirit, with many revolutionary sites and revolutionary relics. The training camp combines on-site teaching with classroom lectures to tell the trainees about the development history and fine traditions of the people's army.
Starting from Xi'an and heading north, the red landmarks of Zhaojin, Wuqi, Wayaobao, and Pagoda Mountain string together a magnificent history. After listening to the theoretical guidance and lectures of experts, the trainees came to Zhaojin, an important origin of the Yan'an spirit. In the exhibition hall on the first floor of the Zhaojin Memorial Hall of the Shaanxi-Gansu Border Revolutionary Base, several grenades strung together by a thick hemp rope sparked a discussion among the trainees.
"This is a unique weapon invented by the military and civilians of Zhaojin, the 'hemp braid grenade'. The Red Army soldiers raised the grenade above their heads, swung it a few times and threw it out. Not only can it be thrown far, but it is also very powerful..." The tour guide introduced that in the early 1930s, under extremely difficult and harsh circumstances, the older generation of revolutionaries carried out revolutionary activities here, formed the 26th Army of the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army, and established the Shaanxi-Gansu Border Revolutionary Base with Zhaojin as its center.
After the visit, He Cheng, a student from Bailuzhou Middle School in Ji'an City, Jiangxi Province, was deeply touched. He said: "There are many of these 'local methods' in my hometown. The teacher said that the spirit of hard work is never outdated. I think whether it is the arduous war years or the present with abundant material conditions, we need to work hard and unremittingly."
Pan Xianpeng, leader of the Guangxi team, said that after this training camp, he had more ideas on how to carry out red traditional education with diverse forms and rich content in student military training.

A skin color dividing line
Sharpening muscles and tempering style
The summer sun is scorching. After the training, the trainees not only have a tanned face, but also have an obvious skin color dividing line near their rolled-up sleeves. They say that is the "medal" of training.
Holding a shield in the left hand and a baton in the right hand, the students were in high spirits and shouted loudly... Near noon, at the training ground of the Armed Police Engineering University, the students were carefully training in baton and shield techniques under the explanation and demonstration of military instructor Bu Zhendong. Although their camouflage uniforms were already soaked with sweat, none of them asked for a rest, and they performed every move in place without any compromise.
"Baton and shield tactics are a basic skill for effectively dispersing and arresting people when dealing with emergencies. It has the characteristics of strong protection and rapid attack." Bu Zhendong said that the training emphasizes the coordination of stick and shield, and the transition between offense and defense, which is conducive to enhancing the body's flexibility and coordination, and honing the courage to fight and win.
Yao Gang, a staff member of the comprehensive planning group of the military training camp, introduced that in order to highlight the "combat flavor" of the training, they added courses such as enemy capture tactics and baton and shield tactics on the basis of implementing the courses stipulated in the "Military Course Syllabus for Ordinary Colleges and Universities" and the "Military Training Syllabus for High School Students", focusing on the characteristics of the armed police force. They also carried out camping and picnic training at a training base of the Armed Police Engineering University to enhance students' military skills and hone their willpower.
On August 1, on the banks of the Feng River, the trainees conducted a 15-kilometer training. As the team marched forward, the heat wave hit and the team members' physical strength dropped sharply. In the last 3 kilometers, shouts of "Come on" rang out in the team. "At this time, I felt that the finish line was still far away, my legs gradually became uncontrollable, and I began to have the idea of giving up." Wang Shenglin from Sichuan said, "With everyone's encouragement and help, I repeatedly told myself to persevere. When everyone passed the finish line, the sense of accomplishment of defeating myself and the joy of persevering to the end surged in my heart."
"Field training in a high-temperature environment is a big challenge for students." Yao Gang introduced that the whole training lasted about 4 hours, and the training subjects included passing through "contaminated" areas, hiding from enemy air raids and armed raids.
"This kind of training is hardcore enough, and the atmosphere of field marching is full of energy!" Ma Haozhe from the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps said that long-distance marches and interspersed with various "enemy situations" are hard, but they train real skills.
How much you can gain from the training depends on the assessment at the final stage. When we first entered the camp, we knew there would be such a strict assessment, so we always set high standards and strict requirements during the training.
If a marking pole is knocked down, 5 seconds will be added; if a triangular bandage or dressing falls off, 5 seconds will be added; if a marking pole is missed, 5 seconds will be added...Opening the assessment score sheet, the reporter saw that the score addition and deduction items for the battlefield medical rescue course were clearly stated, and the assessment team gave scores based on the on-site situation.
"The assessment closely follows the key points of each link and refines the movements to make the scoring more fair and objective. The assessment and acceptance is not only a means to understand the training situation, but also a method to improve the training effect." Li Bo, head of the teaching and evaluation group of the military training camp, introduced that strict training and strict assessment can cultivate a tenacious fighting style, which can allow young students to experience real military training and deepen their understanding of the military camp.
Yu Zhe from Shandong University said: "The formation training under the scorching sun, the enemy capture tactics on the training ground, the long-distance march in the wild... the hard but fulfilling training life made me feel the blooming of youth. This is what is called tempering into steel! I am not afraid of any difficulties in the future."
A red notebook
Determined to Serve the Country and Bloom the Dream
"I am eager to learn more about the armed police force and find the direction for my future efforts here."
On the first day of registration, Feng Haoxuan, a student at Shenyang Jianzhu University, wrote the following sentence in his notebook. This red-covered notebook, printed with the emblem of the military training camp and the emblem of the Armed Police Engineering University, was a gift prepared by the training camp for the students at the beginning of the camp, hoping that they would record their growth and leave precious memories.
Last August, Feng Haoxuan's hometown, Haiyang Village in Qingyuan Manchu Autonomous County, Liaoning Province, was hit by heavy rains, and some houses and farmland were flooded. In the critical moment, the armed police officers rushed to the scene, set up tents for the villagers, and sent them daily necessities to help them tide over the difficulties.
"I always remember how they shuttled through the wind and rain." Feng Haoxuan said that before the summer vacation, he heard that there was a national student military training camp activity that could be held at the Armed Police Engineering University, and he was the first to sign up.
Many students sign up because they are curious about the military camp and want to learn more about the troops.
Ren Zhengnan, a key training instructor, said that many students wanted to join the military, but they did not know much about the real military. At the beginning, some students had a strong sense of self-awareness and did not understand the strict management, always asking "why" for everything.
Li Weiyi, a student at Zhejiang Bayi School, said frankly that at first he could not accept the requirements of running when assembling, collecting mobile phones at a fixed time, and turning off lights at a fixed time. "Gradually, I found that the strict discipline requirements made me have a stronger sense of time and did things less procrastinating. After putting down my mobile phone, my daily routine became more regular, and I interacted more with my classmates, and gained precious friendships," said Li Weiyi.
From reluctance to acceptance, from passivity to initiative, from misunderstanding to recognition, the transformation of the students in the training took place quietly. Ren Zhengnan said: "Now, the students have begun to look like soldiers. As the activity progresses, more and more students come to me for advice on the standards for joining the army and the process of applying for military academies."
In the first half of this year, Xiang An, a student at China University of Mining and Technology, signed up to join the army, but was unable to do so due to limited quotas. This summer, he signed up for a military training camp. A visit to a mobile detachment of the Shaanxi Armed Police Corps left a deep impression on Xiang An.
The majestic step-step stab, the vigorous left-swing punch... On the training ground, the detachment's officers and soldiers performed assassination exercises, enemy capture techniques, climbing and other subjects in turn, which made the students present dazzled. When the special forces soldiers jumped from a high building to perform a rappelling show, the students couldn't help but shout out: "So cool!"
"The hard training and sweating on the training ground, and the attentive listening and tears in the lecture hall have made me better understand the people's army, know what it means to join the army, and made my determination to join the army even stronger," said Xiang'an.
Xiao Gangyun, leader of the Jiangxi Provincial Team who has participated in four military training camps and professor at Jinggangshan University, told reporters that not long ago, he received a good news call from Yu Xiangyu, a student who participated in the training last year, and learned that Yu Xiangyu was admitted to the National University of Defense Technology.
Time flies, and the 14-day military training camp activities soon came to an end. At the closing ceremony, more than 760 students sang military songs, and the singing resounded through the sky. They will resolutely and bravely rush to the next goal.
The reporter learned that after the delegation returns, various places will publicize the deeds of outstanding students participating in the training through media platforms, organize campus sharing sessions to share their training experiences, give full play to their role as a spark, and drive and influence more young students to devote themselves to national defense.
Before leaving the camp, Liu Shuya, a student at Mianyang Experimental Senior High School in Sichuan Province, wrote solemnly in her notebook: "Next stop, military camp."
