Shanghai is expected to launch a field test of driverless intelligent connected cars for ordinary citizens within the next week at the earliest, and the test will be free of charge. Shanghai has also become the first city in China to implement an autonomous driving test policy and has opened multiple demonstration areas.

It is understood that the first batch of 5 vehicles will be put into public testing, and new vehicles will follow in succession, with more models. The specific number of vehicles put into use and the models will be flexibly adjusted according to the performance after actual testing.

At this year's World Artificial Intelligence Conference, Baidu Zhixing Technology, Pony.ai Technology, and Saiko Intelligent Technology obtained the Shanghai Driverless Intelligent Connected Vehicle Demonstration Application License, becoming the first batch of companies to obtain this qualification. Pony.ai said that Shanghai citizens can make reservations for driverless self-driving taxis through its mobile app, covering a 205-kilometer route in Pudong.

Industry insiders said that the demonstration license is a key step in the commercialization of autonomous driving, and autonomous vehicles will be managed in accordance with the catalog of complete vehicles in the future. This means that autonomous vehicles have changed from temporary license plates to formal license plates.

According to the relevant standards of "Automobile Driving Automation Classification", autonomous driving can be divided into L0 to L5, corresponding to six levels: "emergency assistance, partial driving assistance, combined driving assistance, conditional autonomous driving, highly autonomous driving, and fully autonomous driving".

Compared with L2 driving assistance, L3 autonomous driving allows drivers to let go of their hands and take their eyes off the road, without having to constantly monitor the operation and operation of the vehicle.
