after 22 days and sailing through 50 survey routes, the deep sea one ship, which is currently on the 2024 western pacific international voyage scientific expedition, completed a 1,000-kilometer multi-beam survey mission on september 7.

according to wang xiangxin, an engineer at the national deep sea base management center, in simple terms, multi-beam surveying means using multi-beam equipment to "perform real-time b-ultrasound" of the seabed during the ship's voyage to understand the seabed topography and water depth.

the multi-beam surveying operation of this voyage is usually carried out at night. xu dongchao, the third officer of the "deep sea no. 1", said that the ship needs to sail at a speed of 6 to 10 knots during the surveying. the driver needs to operate the ship to accurately sail and change the route along the designed route, and communicate closely with the laboratory engineers to ensure the quality of the surveying line.

"through multi-beam survey lines, we can obtain accurate seabed topographic maps, which can provide a reference for the deployment of diving stations for the jiaolong manned submersible and ensure the safety of the jiaolong's dive. combined with these data, scientists can also speculate on the biodiversity and distribution of the survey area and optimize the research design." said xu xuewei, chief scientist of the voyage and deputy director of the national deep sea base management center.
