flying cars are accelerating their landing! on august 29, the reporter learned from the chengdu port logistics office that on the opening day of the 27th chengdu international auto show (august 30), a flying car will be demonstrated over qinhuang lake. this is not only the first flight demonstration of a flying car at an international auto show held in china, but also the first flight of the flying car in the west. this has added new possibilities to chengdu's exploration of low-altitude economy, and also means that chengdu has taken another step towards "taking a flight" to go out.
as a city with a strong aerospace industry, chengdu is one of the first national pilot areas for low-altitude airspace collaborative management reform and a civil unmanned aerial vehicle test base (test area). it has obvious advantages in developing a low-altitude economy in terms of industrial foundation, innovation capability, and market space.
so, what is the origin of this flying car? it is reported that the flying car is "xpeng hui tianlv hangzhe x2", which is mainly made of all carbon fiber materials. the whole machine adopts a split design, with a maximum endurance of about 25 minutes, a maximum flight altitude of 1,000 meters, and a maximum speed of 130 kilometers per hour. in addition, the flying car uses pure electricity as a power source, which is in line with the goal of green urban transportation and can meet the needs of short-distance travel within the city.
it is reported that the planned flight altitude is below 50 meters, the total range is about 500-600 meters, the flight time of a single flight is 3-5 minutes, and the farthest point of the route is about 200 meters from the take-off and landing point. it is worth mentioning that the traveler x2 obtained the special flight certificate issued by the dubai civil aviation authority as early as october 2022, and successfully conducted its first global flight in dubai. in january 2023, the traveler x2 officially obtained the special flight certificate issued by my country's civil aviation regulatory agency, becoming the first manned evtol (electric vertical take-off and landing) product in china to be formally applied for and successfully awarded.
how difficult is it for a flying car to really fly? professor zhang yangjun of the school of vehicle and transportation engineering at tsinghua university once publicly stated that for flying cars to develop, they still need to break through the three key technical fields of power, platform and transportation. at the same time, issues such as airworthiness certification, "route" formulation, air driving rules, accident responsibility division, air law enforcement methods, as well as air traffic infrastructure, operation model, economic cost, user experience, etc. are all challenges that flying cars will face in the future development.
in june this year, the sichuan provincial government issued the "guiding opinions on promoting the development of low-altitude economy", emphasizing the cultivation and expansion of the low-altitude flight application market. "in terms of airspace service guarantee, this flight has been successfully approved as the first land-air dual-use flying car flight activity plan in the central and western regions." the relevant person in charge of the chengdu port logistics office introduced that this is the first flight demonstration of a flying car at an international auto show held in china, "and it is also an innovative attempt by chengdu to promote the development of low-altitude economy."
the person in charge said that in the next step, chengdu will continue to consolidate and expand the results of the low-altitude airspace management reform pilot, strengthen the construction of the city's low-altitude flight command center, establish and improve low-altitude traffic flight rules, enhance low-altitude flight service guarantee capabilities, and support the cultivation and expansion of the low-altitude flight application market through the full, reasonable, safe and effective use of low-altitude airspace resources.
