Hyundai Motor Group has achieved strong growth in the U.S. new energy vehicle market. According to statistics, the sales volume of electric vehicles ranks second only to Tesla in the market, and the sales volume of hybrid vehicles has also hit a record high.

According to the US automotive research agency Motor Intelligence on the 21st, Hyundai Motor, Kia, and Genesis accounted for 10% of the US electric vehicle market share from January to July, ranking second only to Tesla (50.8%). This is far ahead of US automakers Ford (7.4%) and GM (6.3%).

Tesla holds the top spot with half of the electric vehicle market, but its share has dropped significantly from around 70% in 2022 and around 60% in 2023. Its share in the second quarter was 49.7%, the first time it has fallen below 50% in a quarter. On the contrary, Hyundai Motor Group holds the second spot with a 10% share of the electric vehicle market. Its share has increased by more than 3 percentage points from a year ago.

Currently, Hyundai Motor Group sells nine types of electric vehicles in the U.S. market. Sales of models based on the "E-GMP" platform, such as Hyundai IONIQ 5•6 and Kia EV 6•9, have increased dramatically. According to a U.S. research agency, IONIQ 5 sold 18,728 units (3.6% market share) from January to June this year, ranking fourth among all models. IONIQ 6 also sold 6,912 units, twice as much as a year ago (3,245 units). EV6 (10,941 units) broke through 10,000 units in half a year for the first time, and EV9 also sold 9,671 units, reaching the level of EV6.

In addition, in the automobile safety evaluation conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) of the United States this year, there are 10 electric vehicles that received the highest scores of "Top Safety Pick" and "Top Safety Pick Plus", of which four are from Hyundai Motor Group, the most among vehicle manufacturers. These four are IONIQ 5, IONIQ 6, Genesis G80 Electric Vehicle and GV60.

Hybrid car sales have also improved. Hyundai Motor and Kia sold a total of 93,742 hybrid cars in the United States in the first half of this year. With the 19,386 units sold last month, the total will exceed 110,000 units. This has reached 62% of the historical high last year, and a new record is inevitable.

"Hyundai Motor's sales of hybrid and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) increased by 25% as of last month," said Jose Munoz, global chief operating officer (COO) of Hyundai Motor Group. "Hyundai Motor Group is also working to increase the production of hybrid vehicles."

HMGMA is a new plant that Hyundai Motor Group started construction on in October 2022. It was originally planned to be a dedicated electric vehicle plant for Hyundai Motor and Kia, but recently it was decided to produce hybrid vehicles due to the shrinking electric vehicle market.

Hyundai Motor will announce the specific model production plan of HMGMA on the afternoon of the 28th. Hyundai Motor emphasized: "This year, Hyundai Motor Group ranked second in electric vehicle sales in the United States, with a market share of 10%. The reason why Hyundai Motor Group ranks third in the world is that it provides customers with the power system options they want, such as internal combustion engines, hybrids, PHEVs, and electric vehicles."
