Couplets are very common in calligraphy creation, especially after the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and are loved by calligraphers. In modern times, couplets are still the main form of calligraphy creation. The "National Exhibition" held by the Chinese Calligraphers Association also has a calligraphy exhibition of the word "couplet".

The couplet calligraphy exhibition held by the Chinese Calligraphers Association can undoubtedly let us appreciate the artistic achievements of contemporary calligraphy and couplets. However, when we visited the couplet exhibition, we found that some works did not achieve the expected effect.

The next painting was exhibited at the 8th National Couplet Calligraphy Exhibition. Although the fourteen characters of this painting are "The splendor of the ten directions returns to the tip of the hair, and the clouds and the blue sky", it can be said to be a couplet, but its brushwork is far from a couplet.

The couplet I wrote is written in cursive script, with attention paid to the size, arrangement, interlacing, and avoidance of the characters. There is nothing wrong with this writing method. However, the problem with this painting is that the author makes it look like a painting.

"Couplet" is a kind of calligraphy art, which has at least two meanings: "correspondence" and "connection". The most basic one is two completely different styles above and below.

The couplet mentioned above has a huge difference between the upper and lower parts. For example, the words "十" and "步" in the first line have a sense of forced change regardless of the font size and height, resulting in an inconsistency in the style of the two lines.

The couplets in the 8th Couplet Exhibition were not outstanding in terms of technique. The brushwork was rough and sloppy, the transitions were abrupt and exposed, and the energy connection between the upper and lower characters was not smooth. This painting seemed not to be completed in one go, but was done stroke by stroke.

The biggest difference between cursive writing and regular clerical and seal scripts is that the Qi flow throughout the body. If the Qi is blocked, the order will be lost and the realm will not be able to reach a high level.

The author of the painting above is Deng Fengzhou from Guangdong. I have collected some of his calligraphy works from the Internet. He is not only proficient in cursive and seal scripts, but also in regular and running scripts, and has achieved great attainments.

Take his regular script for example, "Shufu on the east wall, ink forest in the west garden", which is obviously influenced by Chu Suiliang's "Zan of Ni Kuan". The brushwork is exquisite and the structure is rigorous. It looks very elegant on the patterns of bamboo, chrysanthemum, etc.

This editor believes that this calligraphy is better than the one selected for the National Couplet Exhibition in terms of both the maturity of calligraphy and artistic conception. But if this painting is really taken to the Couplet Calligraphy Exhibition held by the Chinese Calligraphers Association, what will be the outcome?

Perhaps the effect of this regular script will not be very good. On the one hand, Tang regular script is too close to the ancients, and on the other hand, the work is too small and too simple. In short, it is not that his calligraphy is so bad, but that his calligraphy is incompatible with the atmosphere of the current calligraphy exhibition.

Good works cannot be included in the exhibition, and the works selected are not necessarily good. The current calligraphy exhibition is indeed a bit weird.

Deng Fengzhou's calligraphy is also very good. You can see that he has a wide range of skills. Not only does he have traces of the two Wangs, but he also has the running script of Yan Zhenqing, and the style of famous calligraphers in the Song and Yuan dynasties. His characters are relatively regular, and the ink used is relatively thick, showing his artistic pursuit of "being different from the world".

The last point is that Deng Fengzhou was noticed because of his first eight exhibitions, but this time, his work was inferior. This is very interesting.
