SIE Japan Studio, which developed Gravity Rush, Shadow of the Colossus, and Bloodborne (in collaboration with FromSoftware), was once one of PlayStation's most famous studios. They were known for producing various high-profile IPs, but in 2021 Sony chose to close SIE Japan Studio.

Looking back on the closure, Gravity Rush producer Keiichiro Toyama recently explained the main reason in an interview with VGC, pointing out that although they are good at making more creative and experimental works, PlayStation still wants the team to launch big-budget 3A games.

"My goal has always been to create original games," Toyama said. "I feel like I can do that without a big budget. It also allows me to express myself. By being independent, I can do that. During my time at Sony, I feel like I'm accomplishing what I want to do."

Currently, Keiichiro Toyama is working on a new horror game "Stray Dog", which is expected to be released on November 8 and will be available on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
