china youth daily client news (china youth daily and china youth network reporter in cambodia wang yan) recently, the 19th batch of medical experts from the chinese people's liberation army to assist cambodia successfully assisted the royal cambodian army general hospital in completing the first scoliosis surgery.
according to the reporter, a 70-year-old local female patient had been suffering from trunk tilt for 5 years, with worsening back pain and inability to take care of herself. these are typical symptoms of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis entering adulthood. the military medical team worked with several experts from the department of spine deformity of the second affiliated hospital of the naval medical university (shanghai changzheng hospital) to develop a surgical plan for "scoliosis three-dimensional correction bone grafting and fusion internal fixation + intervertebral bone grafting and fusion". with the close cooperation of the spine surgery team of the royal cambodian army general hospital, dr. lin tao, a young expert in the department of spine deformity of the military medical team, performed the surgery and successfully completed the spinal correction surgery. only one week after the operation, the patient's original symptoms disappeared. for the first time in 60 years, she "straightened her back". the patient and her family were very satisfied with the results of the operation and praised the "chinese technology".

lin tao told the china youth daily and china youth network reporter that scoliosis is a type of disease that is highly hidden and progresses rapidly. patients who do not receive timely treatment will suffer from varying degrees of cardiopulmonary failure, limb nerve dysfunction, and even paralysis, which will impose a huge burden on individuals and society. in their daily work, the military medical team found that there are a considerable number of patients with pain and dysfunction caused by scoliosis in the outpatient department of the royal cambodian army general hospital, but scoliosis surgery is difficult, and cambodian doctors lack basic knowledge and treatment methods for such diseases, resulting in many patients having to control pain by taking medication.
in order to help cambodia establish a scoliosis treatment system and improve its scoliosis diagnosis and treatment capabilities, the military medical team conducted systematic lectures and training on scoliosis theory for spinal surgeons at the royal armed forces general hospital, and established a sequential diagnosis and treatment process for scoliosis in cambodia.
"the successful completion of the first scoliosis surgery marks the 'first shot' in the prevention and treatment of scoliosis in cambodia," said lin tao. "at present, we have launched the first round of scoliosis screening for primary and secondary school students in cambodia (in phnom penh). this is also the first scoliosis screening project in cambodia, which is of great significance to improving the detection rate, diagnosis and treatment rate of scoliosis in cambodia and improving the physical health of cambodian teenagers."
dr. he wen, chief of spine surgery at the royal cambodian armed forces general hospital, said in an interview with china youth daily and china youth network that this scoliosis correction surgery was the first one not only performed at the royal cambodian armed forces general hospital but also in cambodia. it received technical support and help from chinese experts. he believed that in the future, the royal cambodian armed forces general hospital will serve as a benchmark in the field of scoliosis treatment in cambodia and better serve the cambodian people. with the launch of the screening for adolescent scoliosis, more and more adolescent scoliosis patients have been discovered and received timely treatment intervention, avoiding the deterioration of scoliosis. "as of august this year, more than 10 adolescents with scoliosis have been found, and we have provided corresponding treatment before the severity of the disease requires surgery."
it is understood that since 2000, at the invitation of cambodia, the chinese ministry of national defense has continued to assist in the construction of the royal cambodian army general hospital. in 2004, it started the construction of the comprehensive diagnosis and treatment building "china building", donated large-scale medical instruments and equipment, and continuously sent military medical expert teams to provide on-site assistance, aiming to promote in-depth cooperation between the chinese and cambodian militaries, improve the cambodian military's medical support capabilities, and serve local military and civilians.
over the years, the military medical experts, mainly from the affiliated hospital of the chinese people's liberation army naval medical university, have treated more than 10,000 local patients and completed more than 5,000 operations, winning wide acclaim. the chinese ministry of national defense has also sent senior expert groups to cambodia for free medical treatment on many occasions, imparting advanced medical concepts, technologies and experience to the medical staff of the royal cambodian army general hospital, continuously improving the hospital's treatment level and making important contributions to improving the welfare of cambodian soldiers and civilians.
