This year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Brazil. Over the past half century, no matter how the international situation changes, the relationship between the two countries has always maintained stable development, and the friendship between China and Brazil has taken root in the hearts of the two peoples and has lasted for a long time. While the bilateral practical cooperation has deepened, the cultural exchanges between China and Brazil have become increasingly active.
In recent days, the "Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between China and Brazil - China-Brazil Music Tour in Northeastern Brazil" co-organized by China and Brazil has entered Natal, São Louis and other places; the Beijing Dance Academy National Dance Troupe presented Chinese folk dance performances to the Brazilian people, showing the charm of China's multi-ethnic culture; a Chinese Wu Opera performance appeared in Brasilia, and the audience applauded continuously; a delegation from Northwest Minzu University in Gansu visited several cities in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, showing the audience the "Hu style and Han charm" and "colorful China" of the ancient Silk Road... To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, artists from China and Brazil used splendid cultural activities to present a cultural feast for the Brazilian people, further narrowing the distance between the hearts of the two peoples.
Cultural exchange activities are exciting
China and Brazil established diplomatic relations on August 15, 1974. On August 15 this year, China and Brazil jointly held a number of activities to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.
On the same day, the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs held a seminar titled "Fifty Years of Friendship and Cooperation Towards Inclusive and Sustainable Development". Brazilian Vice President Alckmin, Deputy Foreign Minister Darosa and Chinese Ambassador to Brazil Zhu Qingqiao attended the seminar. During the seminar, the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also held the launch of the book "Brazil and China: 50 Years of Diplomatic Relations" and the opening ceremony of the exhibition "Brazil-China: Fifty Years of Friendship and Cooperation Towards Inclusive and Sustainable Development". Alckmin said that in the next 50 years, Brazil and China will open up new paths side by side and build a bright future with a shared destiny.
On the same day, in the plenary hall of the Brazilian Congress of the House of Representatives, the national anthems of China and Brazil were played, and a special meeting was held to celebrate the "Chinese Immigration Day" and the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Zhu Qingqiao, Pinato, chairman of the Brazilian-Chinese Congressional Front of the Brazilian Congress, and others jointly cut a giant cake with fruits and cream spelling out the 50th anniversary logo of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Brazil, and sang the birthday song. Afterwards, the commemorative stamps and stamps for the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries were first issued. After the meeting, the participants came to the Black Hall of the Congress Building to watch the photo exhibition entitled "Bonds: Beautiful Brazil, Beautiful China" and the Chinese folk dance performance brought by the Beijing Dance Academy National Dance Troupe.
On the evening of August 15th, local time, many landmark buildings in Brazil, such as the Mane Garrincha National Stadium and the TV Tower in the capital Brasilia and the Lapa Arch in Rio de Janeiro, lit up red lights. On the evening of August 15th, Beijing time, at the Juyongguan Great Wall in Beijing, the Chinese and Brazilian national flags and the logo of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Brazil were also projected on the tower. At the same time, China's Tianjin, Chongqing, Shandong, and Brazil's Amazonas, Bahia, Sao Paulo and other China-Brazil friendly provinces and cities also held light shows at local landmarks. "I like this passionate 'Chinese red', and I hope that the friendship between the two countries will always be warm and full of vitality." Brazilian citizen Enrique said.
Recently, a cheerful and enthusiastic song "Good News from Beijing to the Border Village" was played from the Artur Azevedo Theater in the historic city of São Luís, Brazil, kicking off the "Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between China and Brazil - China-Brazil Music Tour in Northeast Brazil (São Luís Station)". The concert was jointly organized by the Chinese Consulate General in Recife and the Maranhão State Government. At the concert, famous Chinese songs such as "Hmong Dance", "New Year Overture" and "Jasmine Flower" were intertwined with music composed by local Brazilian musicians, which resonated deeply with the audience.
In addition, the Brazilian city of Recife will set 2024 as the "Year of China". This year's Beijing International Film Festival invited Brazil as the guest of honor and held the Brazilian Film Week. Taking the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations as an opportunity, China and Brazil will also comprehensively strengthen exchanges and cooperation in various fields such as legislatures, political parties, localities, culture, education, tourism, and youth.
Laying a good public opinion foundation for bilateral relations
What are the reasons why China-Pakistan friendship has endured for 50 years? Two signed articles are worth paying attention to.
"After fifty years of sharing weal and woe, China and Brazil have become good friends across mountains and seas." Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister, said in a signed article published in the Brazilian mainstream media Folha de São Paulo that in the 1980s, the Brazilian TV series "Slave Girl" became popular in China and became a bright spot in the cultural exchanges between China and Brazil. As cultural exchanges continue to be enriched and diversified, the people of the two countries are connected, their feelings are integrated, and their strengths are gathered. The rainstorm disaster in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, has touched people's hearts. The Chinese Red Cross, Chinese people in Brazil, and Chinese-funded enterprises have extended a helping hand to the disaster area, providing nearly 10 million reais in material aid to help the Brazilian people rebuild their homes. The exchanges and cooperation between the two countries in the fields of education, culture, sports, think tanks, and media are becoming increasingly active. It is believed that with the entry into force of the 10-year visa agreement between the two countries, the opening of the Brazilian Consulate General in Chengdu, and the resumption of direct flights between China and Brazil, people-to-people exchanges will be more convenient and the friendship between the peoples will be deeper.
Mauro Vieira, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federative Republic of Brazil, published a signed article in the Chinese official media People's Daily, saying that over the past half century, the characteristics of Brazil-China diplomatic relations have been to focus on common and long-term goals, promote the continuous deepening and diversification of cooperation, carry out close and efficient institutional political contacts, and bring tangible results to the two societies. Over the past 50 years, Brazil and China have consolidated mutual trust, strengthened interaction, and established common interests in a wide range of fields such as trade, investment, finance, agriculture, food security, energy, environment, climate change, outer space, education, culture, health and scientific and technological innovation.
Brazilian Ambassador to China Gao Wang believes that Brazil and China have their own political systems, but this does not prevent the two sides from seeking common interests and promoting mutually beneficial cooperation, because the most fundamental goal of both countries is to improve people's lives. "Mutually beneficial cooperation in the fields of economy, trade and investment is an important engine for the development of our bilateral relations. Mutual trust in politics and diplomacy allows bilateral relations to continue to move forward in a complex international environment."
"Cultural exchanges have laid a good public opinion foundation for China-Brazil bilateral relations. In recent years, China-Brazil cultural exchanges have been characterized by wide fields, in-depth levels and diversification, covering tourism, art, film, audio-visual, culture and museums, etc. Local exchanges have also become increasingly active, playing an important role in promoting mutual understanding between the two peoples." Cao Ting, deputy director and associate researcher of the Latin American Research Office of the Institute of International Studies of Fudan University, said in an interview with our reporter that the favorable factors that promote the vigorous development of China-Brazil cultural exchanges include: the continuous strengthening of high-level friendship and mutual trust between the two countries, which has laid a political foundation for bilateral cultural exchanges; the strong desire of the people of the two countries to strengthen communication and exchanges; and the increasingly fast international flights and network communication have provided great convenience.
Daniel Almeida, chairman of the Brazil-China Friendship Group of the Brazilian House of Representatives, said that Brazil and China are "distant neighbors". Although the two countries are thousands of miles apart, they have many common pursuits. Cultural exchange is a key factor in bringing the two sides closer. In recent years, cultural exchanges between Brazil and China have increased, and the two sides have a better understanding of each other.
Set an example for exchanges between countries
Over the past 50 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Brazil, the two countries have always taken common development as their goal, viewed each other's development as their own opportunity, promoted pragmatic cooperation to achieve leapfrog development, strongly supported their respective modernization construction, and brought great benefits to the people of both sides. Since 2009, China has been Brazil's most important trading partner and one of Brazil's major sources of foreign investment. Brazil is the first Latin American country to exceed US$100 billion in exports to China and is China's largest trading partner in Latin America. There are 12 Confucius Institutes in Brazilian universities, ranking first in Latin America.
"In the 50 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations, China and Pakistan have achieved fruitful results in exchanges and cooperation in various fields and have accumulated rich experience. Only by adhering to the principles of mutual respect, equality, win-win cooperation and a correct view of righteousness and interests can the relationship between the two countries be stable and long-lasting." Cao Ting said that in the future, China and Pakistan are expected to further strengthen green economic cooperation, especially in the development of renewable energy and the manufacturing of electric vehicles; strengthen scientific and technological cooperation, especially in the fields of aerospace and biopharmaceuticals; strengthen cultural industry cooperation, especially tourism and education cooperation, to promote mutual understanding between the people of the two countries.
In recent years, China-Pakistan practical cooperation has moved towards higher quality and higher level. From artificial intelligence to digital economy, from smart agriculture to biotechnology, China-Pakistan cooperation has been continuously expanding in many cutting-edge fields.
Luciana Santos, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation of Brazil, said that as early as the 1980s, the China-Brazil Earth Resources Satellite Project became a model of cooperation between developing countries. There is still greater potential for cooperation between the two countries in science and technology innovation. Brazil hopes to deepen cooperation with China in emerging technology fields such as artificial intelligence, quantum technology, supercomputing and semiconductors.
Taking the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations as an opportunity, China and Brazil actively discussed the connection between the joint construction of the "Belt and Road" and Brazil's "re-industrialization" strategy, injecting important impetus into the development and revitalization of each other. Brazilian President Lula recently said that Brazil does not want to sit on the "bench" in the joint construction of the "Belt and Road". China responded positively and welcomed Brazil to join the "Belt and Road" family as soon as possible and play a wonderful "world wave" in the construction of the "Belt and Road".
The world today is facing a major change that has not been seen in a century, and the "Global South" is rising collectively. Against this backdrop, the overall, strategic and global impact of China-Pakistan relations is becoming increasingly prominent. While promoting the development and revitalization of each country, it also plays an important role in world peace, stability and prosperity.
José Medeiros, director of the Brazilian Research Center at Zhejiang International Studies University, believes that as major developing countries and important emerging market countries, Brazil and China have continuously deepened their mutual trust and strengthened their friendship over time, setting a model for exchanges between countries in the world.
