Yang Liu was born in Inner Mongolia in 1992 and was selected for the national boxing team in 2013. She won the gold medal in the 69kg women's group at the 2019 National Boxing Championships (second stop). In the women's 66kg category, she won the 2023 Asian Games and 2024 National Women's Boxing Championships.
In the women's 66kg boxing event at the Paris Olympics, Yang Liu defeated Belgian player De Lieu 5-0 in the quarter-finals, and defeated Chinese Taipei player Chen Nien-chin 4-1 in the semi-finals to advance to the final against Cliff.
It is worth mentioning that Cliff once caused an uproar due to "gender controversy". In 2023, the International Boxing Association announced that the test on Cliff proved that she had XY chromosomes with male genetic characteristics, so she was banned. Cliff appealed to the International Court of Arbitration for Sport for this, but later withdrew the appeal. In the women's 66kg boxing round of 16 at the Paris Olympics, Italian athlete Angela Carini collapsed and gave up the game after only 46 seconds against Cliff. After the game, she complained that Cliff's heavy punches were definitely not something a woman could punch. Carini said that she had never been so painful when she was punched when fighting against men before. However, the International Olympic Committee stated that Cliff was born a woman, registered as a woman, and has always lived as a woman, and reiterated that Cliff can continue to be eligible to participate.
Facing such a "controversial player", Yang Liu had a tough fight in the final. Cliff's heavy punches always maintained an effective threat, forcing Yang Liu to lose 0-5 in the end.
