After being approved to conduct conditional autonomous driving (Level 3) highway road tests in Beijing in December 2023, Mercedes-BenzIt was recently announced that it has been approved to carry out highly automated driving (Level 4) urban and expressway autonomous driving tests in Beijing, and will conduct tests on designated roads in Beijing.

As one of Mercedes-Benz China's technical research projects, the L4 testing work aims to deeply explore the cutting-edge technologies in the development of software and hardware for autonomous driving systems.

It is reported that two technologically upgraded Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedans will serve as L4 autonomous driving test vehicles, equipped with numerous sensors designed specifically for the project, including lidar, millimeter-wave radar and cameras. The test vehicles are equipped with redundant systems to further enhance system safety.

According to Mercedes-Benz, the test car can safely and easily complete actions such as parking in and out of parking spaces, U-turns, driving in and out of roundabouts, and unprotected left turns. On highways, if the vehicle in front slows down, the test car can automatically change lanes and can pass through toll stations. In extreme situations, the vehicle will implement a minimum risk strategy and find a safe place to park on its own.

Level 4 autonomous driving is a highly automated driving system. In most scenarios and environments, the vehicle can complete all driving tasks autonomously without the need for the driver to be ready to take over at any time.
