Tesla's Shanghai Energy Storage Super Factory is Tesla's first energy storage super factory outside the United States. Wu Xiaohua, deputy secretary of the Lingang New Area Party Working Committee, revealed that the negotiation and signing of the Shanghai Energy Storage Super Factory took only one month, once again refreshing the "Lingang speed", and it is expected to "start construction this year, put into production this year, and deliver this year." Mike Snyder, senior director of Tesla's energy and charging business, said that the continued strong support of the Shanghai and Lingang governments enabled the Tesla Energy Storage Super Factory to officially start construction in such a short time.


It is reported that after Tesla's Shanghai energy storage factory goes into production, the annual output of ultra-large energy storage batteries Megapack will reach 10,000 units, with an energy storage scale of nearly 40 GWh (1 GWh = 1,000 MWh).

Mike Snyder introduced that Megapack, as Tesla's star product, has excellent performance and flexible scalability, and will meet the diverse energy needs of global customers. It can be integrated and installed with battery modules, inverters and temperature systems at any time to help the power grid operate more stably and sustainably. Each battery module is matched with a dedicated inverter, and contains an integrated safety system, professional monitoring software, etc., which greatly improves energy efficiency and safety. At the same time, Megapack batteries can also be updated in real time through OTA air upgrades to continuously optimize functions.

Tesla Senior Vice President Zhu Xiaotong said that Tesla is committed to forming an innovative technology complex with vertical integration of the entire industry chain in the fields of electric vehicles, energy storage products, artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics, and the energy storage business is an important part of its diversification strategy. The start of construction of the Shanghai Energy Storage Super Factory will further consolidate Tesla's leading position in the energy storage field and promote the progress and development of the global green energy industry.

Since 2015, Tesla has launched the home energy storage battery Powerwall and the ultra-large commercial energy storage battery Megapack in the United States, targeting the home energy storage market and the commercial and industrial energy storage market respectively. Tesla's energy storage products are currently distributed in more than 65 countries and regions around the world. The annual installed capacity in 2023 is 14.7 GWh, and the installed capacity in the first quarter of 2024 reached a record 4.1 GWh. It is one of Tesla's fastest growing businesses. In the first quarter of 2024, Tesla's energy storage business gross profit increased by 140% year-on-year.

The energy storage equipment industry is also the core content of Shanghai's high-quality development. As a major energy project in Shanghai, the construction of the Shanghai Energy Storage Super Factory will help Lingang accelerate industrial agglomeration and build an energy storage industrial park; at the same time, it will promote Shanghai to build a green energy system and allow the city to develop in a more environmentally friendly and sustainable direction.

Lu Yu, director of the High-Tech Department of the Lingang New Area Management Committee, said that the industrial chain and supply chain overlap between energy storage and new energy vehicles is very high, and batteries, energy management systems, structural parts, etc. are all interconnected. "On the one hand, the local new energy vehicle industry cluster is already very mature, and can quickly build a local industrial chain and supply chain with Tesla's energy storage factory to achieve synergy."

On the other hand, such a large industrial cluster originally only served one terminal product - automobiles, and even mainly served two brands, Tesla and SAIC. To some extent, it is not stable. Once the terminal has unfavorable sales, the entire industrial cluster will fluctuate, amplifying uncertainty and unfavorable factors. In fact, the automobile market fluctuates very frequently. For example, in the past six months when Tesla's vehicle sales fluctuated, the local automobile industry chain was affected to a certain extent.

When the energy storage plant is put into operation, the industrial cluster will be able to serve another type of terminal industry at the same time. Lu Yu believes that the establishment of Tesla's energy storage plant in Shanghai is expected to enhance the resilience and risk resistance of the local industrial chain and achieve better health and stability.
