According to the China Machinery Science Research Institute Group Co., Ltd., Comrade Lin Shangyang, an outstanding member of the Communist Party of China, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, a famous expert in my country's welding field, chief scientist of the China Machinery Science Research Institute Group, researcher and doctoral supervisor of Harbin Welding Research Institute Co., Ltd. of the China Machinery Science Research Institute Group, died in Suzhou at 17:43 on July 20, 2024 at the age of 92 due to illness.

Public information shows that Lin Shangyang was born in Xiamen, Fujian Province in March 1932, graduated from Harbin Institute of Technology with a major in welding technology and equipment in August 1961, and joined the Communist Party of China in March 1981.

He has served as director of the research laboratory, deputy chief engineer, and director of the technical committee of Harbin Welding Research Institute. He has also served as secretary-general of the Welding Society of the Chinese Society of Mechanical Engineers, chairman of the Harbin Science and Technology Association, standing committee member of the Heilongjiang Science and Technology Association, and professor of Harbin Institute of Technology. He was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1995.

Lin Shangyang is one of the founders of my country's underwater welding technology, the founder of twin-wire narrow gap submerged arc welding technology, the promoter of low-cost welding automation and robotic welding applications, and the pioneer of high-power solid laser welding technology.

He has won many national science and technology awards, including the National Science Conference Award, the National Science and Technology Progress Second Prize, the National Technological Invention Third Prize, and other national science and technology awards. He has won the National Model Worker, the National May 1st Labor Medal, the National Outstanding Science and Technology Worker, the National Gold Medal for Outstanding Children of the Border, the International Institute of Welding (IIW) Patton Award (Lifetime Achievement Award), the Chinese Society of Mechanical Engineers "Technical Achievement Award", the China Welding Lifetime Achievement Award and other honorary titles.

According to the Chinese Academy of Engineering's congratulatory letter to Lin Shangyang on his 90th birthday in March 2022, for more than half a century, Lin Shangyang has been adjusting his research direction in a timely manner based on the needs of national construction in different periods, working to solve practical problems, and always at the forefront of engineering technology:

In the 1960s, Lin Shangyang developed four types of high-strength steel welding wires for welding large power plant boiler drums and chemical equipment. In the 1970s, he invented the underwater local drainage gas shielded semi-automatic welding technology, which was used for underwater welding of offshore drilling/oil platforms and other marine engineering facilities. In the 1980s, he invented the double-wire narrow gap submerged arc welding technology, which was used for welding the world's heaviest hydrogenation reactor and the world's largest 80,000-ton hydraulic press main working cylinder. In the 1990s, he developed the first large-scale arc welding robot workstation for bulldozer frames, and actively promoted the technological transformation of low-cost automation of welding production. Since 2000, Lin Shangyang has continued to work hard and has obtained 5 invention patents in high-power solid laser-arc composite heat source welding technology, making important contributions to promoting industry upgrades.
