“artistic creation can only arise from a curious and open mind. as a system, its richness lies in the simultaneous acceptance of the principles of harmony and conflict. it is the competition between these two elements or givens that creates a whole; therefore, the reverse organizational principles become a factor in development and an indispensable driving force in the creative process.”

——bernard venet

we are very honored to hold a large-scale retrospective exhibition of bernar venet, one of the most important artists on the international stage, at the phoenix center, the headquarters of phoenix tv and a newly emerging art institution, to commemorate the establishment of diplomatic relations between china and france 60th anniversary.

bernard venet is widely regarded as the most important french artist living today. since 1961 he has been at the forefront of contemporary art. at the age of 20, bernard venet has conceived a new and groundbreaking artistic vocabulary that integrates material, form and method to explain new concepts with an uncertain logic and intuition.

wiener's poetic materials combine reason and intuition, expressing energetic intellectual precision and highly stimulating visual impact, seamlessly integrating matter and idea in a unique combination of form and time. venet's works are stunningly beautiful, immersing the viewer's body and mind in them, praising unconventional reason and wisdom.

for more than 60 years, bernard venet has articulated a new and profound non-dualistic beauty through an almost forbidding approach to form, material and minimalist ideas. this beauty is not only reflected in form, method and material, but also in concept - he insisted on strict symmetry from the beginning and ruthlessly defied all conventions. bernard venet's great potential lies in his ability to continuously create new ideas, new methods and new forms that have never been seen or imagined before, becoming a bright beacon of originality in the art world.

"bernard venet: beyond ideas and matter" will take you on the artist's artistic journey of more than 60 years. this is a personal artistic exploration marked by constant discovery. from his early work "waste" (1961), created using industrial paint, gravity and discarded cardboard, and "tar" (1961), which addressed the debate between abstract and expressive art, to his latest large-scale corten steel sculpture - 18 meters gao's large-scale public sculpture "convergence: 52.5˚ arc × 14" - this work will be unveiled at the phoenix center in november 2024 as a gift to the 60th anniversary celebration of the establishment of diplomatic relations between china and france.

weinet covers a wide range of art fields, including performance, painting, installation, collective art, sound art, television art, process art, conceptual art, photography, relief sculpture, nft digital art and weathering steel sculpture, plus highly conceptual the subject matter makes his works not only unique, but often cannot be placed in a single category. this fact is reinforced by his consistent rebellious and anti-traditional attitude, as well as his use of every creative method possible to break the rules.

this retrospective shows how bernard venet's autonomous creative path found its own organic essence and function within a diverse range of artistic expressions, all driven by a strongly non-dualist approach of - harmony and conflict, circle and square, order and disorder, angles and arcs, inside and outside, poverty and sublimity, control and chance, depth and surface, duration and speed, gravity and reaction... .vinet could accept all changes because he understood that art, like life and nature, had no real contradictions. to some extent, the concept of paradox itself is just a human self-construction, and we have never truly understood the non-dualistic nature of life.

venet's historic explorations and practices embody an uncertain, arcing, iconoclastic aesthetic that combines more than 60 years of relentless innovation with the only limit - the unknown future. bena venet's work seems to encompass it all: reason, intuition, emotion, wisdom, human depth, openness, resilience, quality and entropy. however, all of these elements lie beneath the surface, waiting to be explored and understood in detail by the audience, both rationally and emotionally. as we can see, his work most effectively impacts the viewer in its most absolute form, but it is also much more than that.

it is a future-oriented achievement that speaks to art and its relationship to new technologies such as artificial intelligence, to science and the human need for order and entropy, to the role of intuition and human transcendence of quantity-based simplicity. the desire of machine logic. it expresses a profound understanding of the human condition and all the challenges it faces with a stubbornly iconoclastic intellect.
