on september 27, 2024 local time, wang yi, member of the political bureau of the central committee of the communist party of china and minister of foreign affairs, met with reporters together with amorim, chief special advisor to the president of brazil, after attending the ministerial meeting of the "friends of peace" group on the ukraine crisis at the united nations headquarters in new york.

wang yi said that brazil, china, south africa, egypt, indonesia, turkey and other "global south" countries jointly launched the "friends of peace" on the ukraine crisis because more and more countries have realized that the ukrainian crisis cannot escalate out of control and the international community we cannot slide into divisive confrontation. we should unite and seek a peaceful solution together. today's meeting reached broad consensus and our position is clear and unequivocal.

we stand firmly on the side of peace. there are no winners in wars and no future in conflicts. peace must be given a chance. the top priority is to cool down the situation, prevent battlefield spillover, and avoid escalation of the war. we must clearly oppose the use of weapons of mass destruction, nuclear proliferation, and attacks on peaceful nuclear facilities such as nuclear power plants.

we stand firmly on the side of reconciliation. russia and ukraine are neighbors who cannot be moved away, and living in harmony is the only realistic option. miscalculations should not escalate and hatred should not accumulate. we encourage russia and ukraine to proceed from the fundamental and long-term interests of their own nations, respect each other's sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity in accordance with the purposes and principles of the united nations charter, accommodate each other's reasonable and legitimate concerns, achieve an early ceasefire and end the war, and jointly seek a comprehensive and lasting solution to the crisis.

we stand firmly on the side of dialogue. no matter how big the conflict is, no matter how deep the contradiction is, it will eventually return to the track of dialogue and negotiation. we hope that the international community will take political settlement as the direction of joint efforts, support the timely convening of an international peace conference recognized by russia and ukraine, allow all parties to participate equally, and conduct fair discussions on all peace options, so as to build a balanced, effective, and sustainable security architecture. we oppose the indiscriminate imposition of unilateral sanctions on other countries under the pretext of crisis. shifting the blame will not help cool down the situation, nor will it help promote a political solution.
