editor's note: the coffee industry magazine global coffee report published a research report on the chinese coffee market in its july-august issue. the report, written by the international coffee organization (ico), details china's bright future in the coffee industry. the report explains where the growth opportunities lie and why it is time for this long-standing superpower to participate in coffee diplomacy and integrate more deeply into the coffee value chain. the following content is compiled by the yilan business & tea coffee observation team.

china is often described as a land of opportunity, a country of potential, and a driver of growth. however, no matter how you look at it, china, as an economic superpower and a populous country, is struggling to find its own unique place in the global coffee industry. so, how do you quantify this?

since the 2010-2011 coffee year, coffee consumption in china has grown at an average annual rate of 21%, compared with an average annual growth rate of 1.8% globally, 5% in south korea, 0.6% in canada, and 1.6% in india (a country with a similar population size and a tea-drinking tradition).
