china news service, beijing, september 4 (reporter lv shaowei) in the first half of this year, zhejiang and africa achieved a trade volume of us$27.88 billion, a year-on-year increase of 3%. among them, imports from africa were us$5.55 billion, a year-on-year increase of 12.9%. zhejiang-africa industrial cooperation has gradually extended from labor-intensive to mid-to-high-end manufacturing, digital economy, cross-border e-commerce and other fields.
the press center of the 2024 forum on china-africa cooperation summit held a briefing on the 4th. chen jiangfeng, deputy director of the foreign affairs office of the people's government of zhejiang province, introduced the situation of zhejiang's exchanges and cooperation with africa.
chen jiangfeng mentioned that zhejiang has established 31 pairs of sister cities with african countries (regions), achieving full coverage of sister cities at the provincial, municipal and county levels. in 2023, zhejiang-africa trade volume reached us$53.9 billion, and zhejiang's registered investment in africa reached us$4.6 billion, both ranking among the top provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) in the country.
chen jiangfeng said that zhejiang-africa cultural exchanges are constantly deepening. more than 20 zhejiang universities have established inter-school cooperation with african universities. eight confucius institutes have been established in cameroon, mozambique, tanzania, south africa and other countries, and a total of 120,000 chinese language talents have been trained for africa. actively attract african students to study in zhejiang. currently, there are more than 6,500 african students studying in zhejiang universities. organize vocational training in aid of africa and train more than 2,800 people for more than 160 african companies. the china-africa economic, trade and cultural forum has become an important platform for exchanges and cooperation with africa.
in terms of medical cooperation, chen jiangfeng introduced that zhejiang has sent medical teams to africa for 55 consecutive years to support countries such as mali, central africa and namibia. from 2022 to 2023 alone, a total of 110 medical aid team members were sent to provide medical services to 183,800 people in the recipient countries. in addition to working in the stationed hospitals, the zhejiang province medical aid africa team went deep into the remote areas of the recipient countries to carry out medical rounds and free clinics, providing treatment and medicines for poor patients who lacked medical care and medicines; and actively spread the culture of traditional chinese medicine in africa, hosted 15 academic exchange conferences of various types, and organized more than 70 medical trainings to promote the improvement of the medical capacity of the recipient countries.
