artificial intelligence is helping humans gain a deeper understanding of the moon.
during the 2024 china international big data industry expo, the institute of geochemistry of the chinese academy of sciences and alibaba cloud jointly released the world's first "lunar science multimodal professional big model" on august 29. generative ai represented by the big model has brought new opportunities for lunar science research.

reporters learned from the press conference that with the rapid development of deep space exploration technology, lunar exploration data has shown a blowout growth. "now the world's exploration data on the moon and planets exceeds 2pb." liu jianzhong, member of the party committee and researcher of the institute of geochemistry, chinese academy of sciences, said that there are densely packed impact craters on the moon, which have an important impact on the evolution of the moon itself, but due to the large number of impact craters and their complex and varied shapes, research is very complicated.
"the most common craters we have counted now are those with a diameter greater than one kilometer. the latest statistics show that there are more than one million of them." liu jianzhong said that as the diameter of impact craters decreases, their number increases exponentially. it is unlikely to identify or count every type of impact crater if it depends entirely on manual labor.
today, the rapidly developing artificial intelligence big model provides a solution to this problem. zeng zhenyu, vice president of alibaba cloud intelligence group and general manager of the solution research and development department, told reporters that since last year, alibaba cloud has fully communicated with the institute of geochemistry of the chinese academy of sciences and spent nearly a year to polish it, expanding the multimodal big model to the field of lunar research.
"the meteorite impact crater is the first pilot project of our cooperation. now, in terms of the age and morphology of lunar impact craters, the accuracy of the lunar science multimodal professional large model can reach more than 80%, which exceeds our expectations." zeng zhenyu said that with the deepening of cooperation between the two sides, the multimodal large model can be expanded to the analysis and research of more geological landforms on the moon in the future.
"using the big model can greatly improve the efficiency of crater identification and reduce research costs." liu jianzhong said that for this project, the institute of geochemistry provided a lot of teaching materials and literature on the moon and planets, nearly 20,000 pdf documents, about 50 tb. after alibaba cloud processed the data of these documents, it became a knowledge center for training the "big model".
"the large professional lunar model will greatly speed up the processing of massive data and help researchers to explore new scientific discoveries," said ouyang ziyuan, an academician of the chinese academy of sciences and the first chief scientist of china's lunar exploration project.
