Original title: Takata airbag problem reappears, BMW and other four brands recall 1.3629 million vehicles
China Economic Net, August 19 (Reporter Guo Yue) Recently, the State Administration for Market Regulation issued five passenger car recall announcements, involving a total of 1,362,949 passenger cars including four brands including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Genesis and Audi.
BMW recalled 1,357,944 domestic and imported vehicles, accounting for 99.63%. The recall was due to the fact that the user modified the steering wheel after the vehicle was sold, which may have caused the driver's front airbag to be installed with an ammonium nitrate gas generator produced by Takata without a desiccant. When the airbag is deployed, the gas generator may explode, causing fragments to fly out and injure the people in the car, posing a safety hazard.
This is also the second brand recall event with a scale of more than one million vehicles in August. Previously, Tesla launched a recall event with a scale of 1.6836 million vehicles. Throughout the year, the number of single recalls with a scale of more than one million vehicles rose to three times. In January, Tesla also issued a recall of more than 1.6176 million vehicles.
The reappearance of Takata's defective airbags is also worthy of attention. From 2016 to 2019, Takata's defective airbags were the main cause of domestic passenger car recalls for four consecutive years, and there have been occasional small-scale recalls since then. This time, more than 1.3579 million vehicles were recalled due to Takata's defective airbags, which shows the wide range of its impact and its long-term persistence.
In addition, Mercedes-Benz, Genesis and Audi recalled 3,139, 1,583 and 283 imported models respectively.
