Astana, August 19 (Xinhua) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin said during a meeting with Azerbaijani President Aliyev on August 19 local time that Russia is willing to play a role in the signing of a peace treaty between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
According to the Azerbaijan State News Agency and TASS, Russian President Vladimir Putin paid a state visit to Azerbaijan from 18th to 19th local time. On 19th, the two heads of state held a small-scale meeting in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, and then hosted a large-scale meeting to discuss bilateral relations between the two countries and international and regional affairs.
During the talks, Aliyev pointed out that Putin's visit was of great significance. "Azerbaijan and Russia have many topics to discuss, and the areas of cooperation between the two sides are gradually expanding. We have decided to strengthen interaction in all areas, and I believe that this visit will further narrow the distance between the two countries," Aliyev said.
Aliyev said that the South Caucasus region now faces new opportunities for achieving lasting peace, and the stability and security of the region depends to a large extent on close interaction between Russia and Azerbaijan.
Putin said Russia hopes to participate in the process of resolving the situation in the South Caucasus. "If we can play a role in the signing of a peace treaty between Azerbaijan and Armenia, facilitate the resolution of border demarcation issues, and facilitate exchanges between the two countries in areas such as logistics and economy, we will be happy to do something," Putin said.
During the talks, the two sides also discussed topics such as trade cooperation, Caspian Sea environmental protection, and preparations for the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29).
After the talks, the two sides issued a joint statement and signed six intergovernmental cooperation documents, including three cooperation agreements in the fields of food safety, plant protection, and health care, as well as three memorandums of understanding in the fields of labor inspection, climate change response, trade and investment.
