Cailianshe News, August 16 (Editor: Zhou Ziyi)Tesla's electric pickup Cybertruck is becoming a focus of research for automakers around the world, such as South Korean automaker Hyundai, which is reportedly conducting a disassembly analysis of the Cybertruck.
According to local South Korean media reports citing industry sources, Hyundai Motor Group's Namyang Research Center began disassembling and analyzing Tesla's Cybertruck at the end of last month.
Reports indicate that the South Korean automaker plans to make waves in the U.S. electric pickup truck market in the coming years as pickup trucks are the best-selling vehicle type in the country.
In the North American market, pickup truck sales last year were between 2.8 million and 3 million, more than twice the sales of sedans. The three best-selling pickup truck models in the United States are Ford F-Series, Chevrolet Silverado and Dodge Ram pickup trucks. According to market research firm Marklines, the sales of these three models exceeded 1.7 million last year, which is more than the total 1.65 million vehicles sold by Hyundai and Kia in the United States last year.
To achieve this goal, Hyundai and Kia are working hard to develop a pickup truck for the U.S. market. They are developing an all-electric pickup truck that will be sold under both the Hyundai and Kia brands.
It is said that Hyundai's goal for this pure electric pickup is to have a driving range of more than 500 kilometers and a heavy load of 4,000 kilograms. Hyundai plans to produce more than 50,000 pure electric pickups per year starting in 2029, while Kia plans to produce more than 50,000 per year starting in 2028.
It remains to be seen why Hyundai is researching Cybertruck. Some analysts point out that Tesla's Cybertruck is an interesting reference for Hyundai, which is quite unique in the market segment due to its innovations such as 48V architecture and wire-controlled steering system.
Online reviews of Cybertruck are also polarized, but it is undeniable that its sales are good. Kelley Blue Book, an American automotive research website, recently pointed out that in July 2024, this all-electric pickup truck was the best-selling model in the US market segment priced over $100,000.
