On August 17, local time, UN Secretary-General Guterres issued a statement through his spokesman, expressing appreciation for the Sudanese government's decision to open the Adre border crossing between the country and Chad for three months. He said that this is the most direct and effective way for humanitarian aid to reach millions of people in Sudan's Darfur region who are facing severe hunger levels.
Guterres stressed that all Sudanese parties must assume their obligations under international humanitarian law and previously agreed modalities and take concrete and sustained measures to facilitate humanitarian access and protect civilians. Humanitarian organizations must have full, safe and unhindered access to all civilians in need in Darfur and throughout Sudan.
The statement reiterated that the United Nations remains fully committed to working with all stakeholders to help end the conflict and alleviate the suffering of the Sudanese people.
