The one-day 44th Southern African Development Community (SADC) Summit was held in Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe, on the 17th local time. The meeting focused on issues such as regional economic integration and industrialization.
Heads of government and representatives from 16 SADC countries attended the meeting, with the theme of "Using innovation to unlock new opportunities for sustainable economic development and promote SADC industrialization". Zimbabwean President Mnangagwa officially succeeded Angolan President Lourenço as the new rotating chairman of SADC at the meeting that day.
In his speech, Mnangagwa said that SADC countries must implement innovative strategies in all economic fields to promote value chain growth, especially to add value to the region's rich minerals and other natural resources. SADC will continue to vigorously implement projects and plans to promote the development of the region. At the same time, SADC countries must firmly defend their sovereignty and economic self-determination.
Mnangagwa thanked the SADC countries for their firm support to Zimbabwe in the face of years of Western sanctions, and called on SADC countries to unite and jointly advance the region's development process for the benefit of all people.
The Southern Common Market now has 16 member states. Its purpose is to establish an open economy on the basis of equality, mutual benefit and balance, break down tariff barriers, promote mutual trade and investment, realize the free movement of people, goods and services, gradually unify tariffs and currencies, and ultimately achieve regional economic integration.
