Xinhua News Agency, Lhasa, August 17 (Reporter Ding Zengni Dalu Danyang) On the 17th, the 2024 Lhasa Half Marathon started in Lhasa, Tibet Autonomous Region. This is the highest-altitude marathon event certified in the country, attracting about 5,000 enthusiasts from all over the country to sign up.
The event included half marathon, speed running (10 km) and health running (5 km), and the number of participants increased by nearly 1,000 compared with last year. After more than an hour of fierce competition, Donzhu Ciren from Nagqu City, Tibet won the men's half marathon championship with 1 hour 12 minutes 57 seconds, and Danzeng Quzhen from Shannan City, Tibet won the women's half marathon championship with 1 hour 25 minutes 20 seconds.
"I am an athlete of the Tibetan middle- and long-distance running team. Maybe because of the altitude of Lhasa, the last 3 kilometers were a bit difficult, but I persevered with my own perseverance. I am especially grateful to my coach and family for their support and help." said Danzeng Quzhen.
The center of Lhasa is about 3,650 meters above sea level. The geographical characteristics of high altitude and low oxygen content attract marathon enthusiasts from all over the country to challenge themselves. Li Jianan, 72 years old, from Nanjing, said, "I started running in 2016 and have participated in 91 full marathons. I am very excited to participate in the Lhasa Half Marathon this time. It is the honor of my life to complete a half marathon on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau." Li Jianan said.
This event also has a charity wheelchair group and a charity roller skating group, allowing more people to enjoy the fun of sports. In addition, the organizers set up a post-race recovery area, a medical rescue service station, oxygen supply and a finish line oxygen chamber to help the athletes recover their physical strength after the race.
