Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said on August 17 local time that a forest fire that broke out in the western port city of Izmir has spread to residential areas, forcing about 900 people to evacuate.
The fire, which started in the Karsiyaka district of Izmir, has been going on for three days. Due to the continued high temperature and dryness in the area, the fire spread rapidly under the influence of strong winds. In the early morning of the 17th, the wildfire spread to residential areas and an industrial area. The authorities quickly evacuated about 900 residents from three villages. The wildfire also burned down 16 houses. So far, no casualties have been reported, but wildlife and ecosystems are suffering significant damage.
In recent days, forest fires have occurred in many places in Turkey, including Izmir Province, Bolu Province and Manisa Province. On the 16th alone, 72 fires broke out across Turkey, and 69 of them have been controlled so far. At present, the fire department is still continuing to carry out firefighting operations in relevant areas through various means such as aerial intervention. The Turkish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry warned that it is expected that high temperatures, extremely low humidity and strong winds will continue in many parts of Turkey in the next week, all of which will increase the risk of forest fires.
