Spanish newspaper El País, August 15, article titled: Chinese universities rise, Spanish universities stick to the Soft Science rankingsIn the latest 2024 Soft Science Rankings, Spanish universities performed steadily against the backdrop of the rapid rise of Chinese universities. The number of Spanish universities on the list decreased from 38 in 2023 to 36. Of the 36 ranked universities, 18 remained in their original positions, 11 rose in ranking, and 7 dropped in ranking. The University of Barcelona re-entered the top 200 in the world this year, resuming its best performance in 2022. The University of Valencia ranked second in Spain.

The full name of the Shanghai Ranking is "Academic Ranking of World Universities", which was first compiled by Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2003 and aims to assess the quality of universities around the world.

Globally, the United States continues to dominate the rankings, with 114 universities in the top 500, with Harvard, Stanford and MIT in the top three. Cambridge and Oxford in the UK follow closely behind. At the same time, the number of Chinese universities has grown rapidly, with a total of 225 universities on the list this year, while the United States has 183.

Professor Domingo do Campo, former president of the University of Vigo and one of the senior researchers of the Soft Science ranking, said that according to the current trend, China is expected to surpass the United States in the top 500 in the near future. Do Campo also said that Chinese universities are large in scale and publish considerable academic achievements every year.

Julio del Corral, a professor at the University of Castilla-La Mancha, agrees: "Despite having flagship universities like Harvard, the United States finds it difficult to keep up with the times, and China is eating its bread." He believes that Spain's data is very positive, it has not lost its position or shown a decline in scientific level. China is advancing very fast, gaining more and more positions and replacing other countries.

Eva Ferreira, president of the University of the Basque Country, is pleased that her school has been ranked among the top 400 in the world. "The Soft Science ranking is one of the most influential university rankings in the world, with a very high reputation and objectivity. Although a number cannot fully define a university, this result is very important to us because it allows us to understand our own positioning." (Author Sara Castro, translated by Liang Ruixuan)
