[Global Network reporter Li Ziyu] The British Guardian reported on the 14th that according to an investigative report released by Israel's Haaretz and a news from an Israeli non-governmental organization, Israeli soldiers used Palestinian civilians as "human shields" in the Gaza Strip to enter and clear tunnels and buildings where they suspected booby traps might be buried. In response, the Israel Defense Forces said that the use of "human shields" is prohibited and that Israel will review the allegations of Haaretz.
The Guardian reported that the NGO, called Breaking The Silence, was founded by Israeli veterans to record military atrocities. The organization's executive director, Nadav Weiman, said that the practice of using Palestinian civilians as "human shields" was very common among different Israeli military units fighting in the Gaza Strip. The organization collected testimonies from some veterans describing this situation.
The Guardian also said that the veterans' testimonies were consistent with an investigative report by Haaretz, which said the Israeli military chief of staff's office was aware of the incident.
"(Israeli military) top brass knew about this," a source who was said to have been involved in finding civilians to serve as "human shields" told Haaretz. The newspaper also quoted an Israeli commander as saying to the soldiers, "Our lives are more important than theirs."
