Canada's new chief human rights commissioner, Birju Dattani, resigned before taking office, Reuters reported on the 12th. His appointment triggered a government investigation and was opposed by some Jewish groups in the country because of his remarks related to Israel.
On August 12, local time, Dattani posted on LinkedIn, an American professional social networking site, announcing his resignation, saying, "I have agreed to resign as Chief Commissioner of the Canadian Human Rights Commission, effective immediately." He also wrote, "I still firmly believe in the work of the Commission, its mission and its importance to our democracy."
According to reports, the Canadian Human Rights Commission is mainly responsible for investigating human rights complaints against the Canadian federal government and is responsible for other related matters.
Dattani was appointed as the chief commissioner in June this year, but his appointment sparked opposition from some Canadian Jewish groups. Dattani was accused of posting on the social platform X accusing the Israeli government of implementing apartheid policies and saying that "Palestinians are prisoners of the Warsaw Ghetto today." He was accused of participating in expert forums related to the "boycott, divestment, sanctions" movement against Israel.
