In the first half of 2024, the series of public science season activities led by the School of Physics of Beijing Institute of Technology, a "national science education base", was successfully held. The activities aim to promote the spirit of scientists and create a characteristic science brand of "the beauty of heaven and earth and the principles of all things". Based in Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei, the activities provide public science services to the whole society, and have created a number of physics science feasts for physics enthusiasts from universities, middle schools and primary schools across the country, with a total of nearly 4,000 people participating in the activities.
"Teacher, this water rocket is really interesting!" Recently, the School of Physics of Beijing Institute of Technology held a unique science summer camp for primary and secondary school students. During the five-day event, teachers led the children to do handicrafts and experiments together. "Why does the wind blow off the roof?" "What is the working principle of the sprayer?" "How does the plane fly into the sky?"... Facing common physical phenomena in life, teachers patiently explained to everyone and combined with vivid demonstrations, so that children can gain knowledge while developing a good habit of thinking about the principles behind the phenomena.
Technological innovation and popularization of science are the two wings for achieving innovative development. As a basic discipline, physics plays an important role in the innovative exploration of cutting-edge science and the popularization of science to the public. Since 2019, the School of Physics has held a series of "Public Science" activities for five consecutive years. Over the past five years, the school has always adhered to the guidance of major basic research issues and has taken it as its mission to improve citizens' scientific literacy, thus condensing a unique brand of popular science culture. In 2024, based on the original achievements, the school's popular science work will be further transformed and upgraded, gradually expanding from the popularization of common sense physics to the popularization of research results in cutting-edge scientific fields.
"Why did physics arise and why has it flourished?" "Why is the singularity of quantum technology coming?" "Why do theory and experiment depend on each other?" With these three profound questions, everyone's thoughts followed the speaker into the long history of physics. On May 31, on the occasion of the eighth "National Science and Technology Workers' Day", the "Hundred Lecture Halls" and big-name lectures of the School of Physics' Public Science Season series of activities were held in the Science Building of Liangxiang Campus. The event invited Professor Sun Changpu, a theoretical physicist, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Graduate School of the China Academy of Engineering Physics, to give a report. The lecture hall with nearly 300 people was full. The students thought carefully, took notes carefully, and followed Professor Sun Changpu to stroll in the world of quantum physics.
"Students, have you ever imagined that the world in science fiction movies could become reality one day?" On February 26, at the opening ceremony of Guangqumen Middle School, Professor Yin Zhangqi of the School of Physics gave students a wonderful "first lesson" on quantum mechanics. He used popular science fiction movies in recent years as an index to introduce the Schrödinger's cat paradox to students, how scientists explore Schrödinger's cat, and how to gain a deeper understanding of time and space. From the basics to the depths, students used movies as a starting point to appreciate the wonderful quantum world and felt that there are rigorous physical theories behind the wild imagination.
"Students, the preparation of special materials under extreme conditions is a very interesting process. Welcome to the high-pressure preparation laboratory of the School of Physics." Following the footsteps of Li Xiang, a teacher from the School of Physics, the students came to the world of special material preparation under extreme conditions. With vivid explanations and real experimental environments and instruments, everyone has a more intuitive understanding of the latest research progress in the field of special material characterization. Since May, the School of Physics has held a total of 4 "Laboratory Exploration Tours" activities. The school has built a communication platform for young teachers and young students who love physics, inviting them to visit the laboratory in depth and introduce the latest research results to help them understand the principles of physics and enhance their recognition of the discipline.
"Teacher, can I make the water boil by heating it with fire?" On April 27, a child from Qujing, Yunnan Province, raised his confusion after participating in the online "Ding Dong Science and Art Magic Classroom". The "Ding Dong Science and Art Magic Classroom" was jointly launched by the School of Physics of Beijing Institute of Technology and the China Millennium Monument. The course mainly explains the common "sound, light, force, electricity and heat" principles for primary and secondary school students, and immerses the children in it with vivid and interesting demonstrations of physical phenomena. "Teacher Shi Hongting's courses are always so popular. Children don't want to leave after they come. They can really learn a lot!" said a parent after class.
