On August 12, local time, Ukrainian Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief Sersky said that the Ukrainian army had controlled 1,000 square kilometers of land in Russia's Kursk Oblast. This was the first official statement from Kiev about the Ukrainian army's offensive against Kursk Oblast.

On the same day, Ukrainian President Zelensky posted a video on Telegram. In the video, Zelensky reported to the president on the battle situation at the Kursk front and said, "The entire front is actually continuing to advance. The situation is under our control. ... At present, we control about 1,000 square kilometers of Russian territory."

Seven days ago (on the morning of August 6), Ukrainian troops suddenly invaded Kursk Oblast on the southwestern border of Russia. This was the largest and most successful cross-border offensive launched by the Ukrainian army in the two and a half years of war.

In his routine video speech on the evening of the 12th, Zelensky said: "It is quite fair to eliminate Russian terrorists where they are and where they launch attacks... Russia brought war to others, and now it (war) is coming home. Ukraine has always only wanted peace, and we will definitely ensure peace."

On August 12, Russian President Vladimir Putin held a video conference with defense officials on the border situation. Acting Kursk Oblast Governor Smirnov said at the meeting that as of August 12, the Ukrainian army had penetrated at least 12 kilometers into the state and controlled a 40-kilometer-wide border area, including 28 settlements. In response, Putin said that these were issues that the military needed to evaluate. Putin stressed that Russia's top priority was to "drive the enemy out of our territory."
