On August 12, the well-known data research company Canalys officially released the Southeast Asia smartphone market report for the second quarter of 2024.

The report shows that in the second quarter of 2024, the overall shipment of smartphones in the Southeast Asian market reached 23.9 million units, a year-on-year increase of 14%. It seems that the overall performance of this market is good and it is also in a state of recovery.

Now let’s look at the overall ranking of the Southeast Asian market:

Champion: Samsung, with 4.4 million units shipped and 18% market share, a year-on-year increase of 5%;

Runner-up: OPPO (excluding OnePlus), with 4.2 million units shipped and a market share of 17%, a year-on-year increase of 24%;

Third place: Xiaomi, with 4 million units shipped and a market share of 17%, a year-on-year increase of 37%;

Fourth: vivo, with shipments of 3.4 million units and a market share of 14%, a year-on-year increase of 37%;

Fifth: Transsion, with shipments of 3.3 million units and a market share of 14%, a year-on-year increase of 12%.

From the overall data, the top five brands are all growing, but Samsung's growth is the smallest at only 5%. Xiaomi and vivo both grew by 37% year-on-year. Therefore, Samsung's first place in this market is not guaranteed, because it is only 200,000 units ahead of OPPO and 400,000 units ahead of Xiaomi. These two brands will leave Samsung behind with a little effort. Moreover, the year-on-year growth rate of domestic brands far exceeds that of Samsung.

Now let’s look at the detailed rankings of Southeast Asian markets:

Indonesian market: Xiaomi ranked first, OPPO ranked second, vivo ranked third, Samsung ranked fourth, and Transsion ranked fifth;

Top five in the Philippine market: Transsion, Samsung, vivo, Xiaomi, and realme;

Top five in the Thai market: OPPO, Samsung, Xiaomi, Apple, and vivo;

Top five in the Vietnamese market: OPPO, Samsung, Xiaomi, Apple, and vivo;

Top five in the Malaysian market: Xiaomi, Samsung, vivo, OPPO, and realme.

From the perspective of market segments, the overall performance of domestic brands is indeed much better than that of Samsung, and this trend is still continuing. Therefore, it is not a big deal for domestic brands to surpass Samsung in this market in the future.

Now our domestic brands are becoming more and more popular in overseas markets. I hope they will continue to work hard and compete with Samsung and Apple in overseas markets.
