In the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Guan Yu was captured in an ambush at Linju and brought before Sun Quan. Sun Quan actually wanted to persuade Guan Yu to surrender, but Guan Yu scolded him: "Blue-eyed boy, purple-bearded rat! I swore brotherhood with Uncle Liu in Taoyuan and vowed to support the Han Dynasty. How could I be in the same group with you, a traitor to the Han Dynasty? I have fallen into a treacherous trap and will die. Why bother saying more!"
Sun Quan was not angry after being scolded. Instead, he turned around and asked his subordinates: "Yun Chang is a great hero of the world. I love him deeply. I want to treat him with courtesy and persuade him to surrender. What do you think?"
Zuo Xian, the chief clerk, acted like a villain: "No. When Cao Cao captured this man, he was granted a title of nobility, a small banquet every three days, a large banquet every five days, a bag of gold when he got on his horse, and a bag of silver when he got off his horse. Despite all these favors, he could not be kept, and he was allowed to kill the generals and leave. As a result, we are forced to move the capital to avoid his attack. Now that my lord has captured him, if we do not get rid of him immediately, I am afraid it will cause trouble in the future."
Sun Quan pondered for a long time and thought that Zuo Xian's words made sense, so he ordered the killing of Guan Yu and Guan Ping.
This story was not invented by Luo Guanzhong, but comes from "Records of Shu" written by Wang Yin, a historian of the Jin Dynasty: "Quan sent generals to attack Yu, and captured Yu and his son Ping. Quan wanted to keep Yu alive to fight against Liu and Cao, but his subordinates said: 'You can't keep a wolf cub, it will definitely cause harm in the future. If Cao Gong doesn't get rid of it immediately, he will bring great trouble to himself, and he is planning to move the capital. How can he let Yu live now!' So he beheaded him."
