UN Secretary-General Guterres issued a statement on August 11 local time, expressing deep concern about the development of the situation in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State in western Sudan. He said that the armed conflict in Sudan has brought devastating consequences to local civilians and further aggravated the humanitarian disaster in El Fasher and its surrounding areas. Famine has already occurred in some areas.
Guterres called on all parties involved in the armed conflict in Sudan to immediately cease hostilities and achieve a lasting ceasefire, and urged all parties to resume political dialogue, pointing out that negotiation is the only way to resolve the issue. He also called on all parties involved in the war to abide by international humanitarian law, protect civilians, allow them to move freely, and facilitate rapid and unhindered humanitarian access.
Hafiz Bakhit, acting governor of Sudan's North Darfur state, issued a statement earlier in the day saying that Sudan's Rapid Support Forces launched an attack on the city of El Fasher on the 10th, killing 28 civilians and injuring 46 people.
On April 15, 2023, an armed conflict broke out between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Sudanese Rapid Support Forces in the capital Khartoum, and the fighting subsequently spread to other areas. The armed conflict, which lasted for more than a year, has caused the deaths of about 19,000 people and displaced 13 million people. (Reporter Zhao Yuanfang)
