Recently, the documentary film "The Whisperer" premiered in Beijing. Produced by Hunan Elephant Partner Film and Television, the film is based on the intangible cultural heritage of Nüshu, with a unique perspective and delicate emotions, giving cultural heritage a new lease of life on the screen.
In the 1950s, Nüshu was discovered in Jiangyong County, Yongzhou City, Hunan Province. The characters are beautiful and slender, shaped like willow leaves. It is a special language used only between women and is also a rare female-only language in the world. In 2006, "Jiangyong Nüshu" was included in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage list.
The Whisperer explores the mental journey of Nüshu inheritor Hu Xin and folk Nüshu promoter Wu Simu, who have grown up under the guidance of Nüshu, and shows the challenges they experienced in the process of inheriting Nüshu culture and their deep understanding and love of Nüshu culture. Hu Xin's calmness and determination, Wu Simu's enthusiasm and persistence, together constitute the moving scenery of the film, allowing the audience to feel the unique charm of Nüshu and appreciate the hardships and greatness of cultural inheritance.
Hu Xin said that for her, Nüshu is not only a kind of writing, but also a spiritual sustenance. "As a Nüshu inheritor, I hope to face everything with a calm and composed attitude, so that more people can understand Nüshu and get more attention." In real life, Wu Simu found a bridge to communicate with history through Nüshu, and also used it as a beacon to remind herself to maintain spiritual independence. The "time and space letter" she wrote not only expressed her respect for the Nüshu people in the past, but also placed her beautiful expectations for the future.
Director Feng Du said that he hopes that through "The Whisperer", the audience can see how Nüshu is still alive today. "I believe that the emotions and wisdom contained in Nüshu can transcend the boundaries of time and space and trigger resonance and thinking among contemporary people."
