According to CCTV News, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky admitted for the first time on the 10th that the Ukrainian army was conducting military operations in Kursk, a Russian border state bordering Ukraine.
Kursk Oblast has been under heavy ground attack from Ukraine since the 6th. On the 10th, the government of Kursk called on residents in high-risk areas to speed up evacuation. The Russian federal government announced a series of measures on the same day to increase security alert in Kursk and the other two border states.
Zelensky mentioned the Ukrainian military operations in Kursk for the first time in a video speech delivered on the evening of the 10th. He said that he received several reports from Alexander Sersky, the commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, on the front-line battles and the Ukrainian side's actions to advance the front line into Russian territory that day, and "Ukraine is proving that it is indeed capable of exerting the necessary pressure... (on Russia)".
In his speech, Zelensky also praised the Ukrainian army's combat brigades on the "front line" such as Sumy Oblast, which borders Kursk.
Alexi Smirnov, acting governor of Kursk Oblast, announced on the social media platform "Telegram" on the 11th that a missile launched by the Ukrainian army at the province was destroyed and its wreckage hit a 9-story residential building in the provincial capital Kursk, injuring at least 13 people, two of whom were seriously injured.
Kursk Mayor Igor Kuchak said on the Telegram platform that residents of the residential building will be evacuated to temporary accommodation and air raid warnings have covered the entire city.
Smirnov has ordered local authorities in Kursk Oblast to speed up the evacuation of residents in high-risk areas. Russian news agency TASS reported on the 10th that more than 76,000 people have been evacuated in the province.
Currently, Russia and Ukraine are exchanging fire in the Sudja region, about 10 kilometers from the border in Kursk Oblast. The region is an important transit hub for Russia to transport natural gas pipelines to EU countries.
Russia has announced the implementation of emergency security measures in Kursk, Belgorod and Bryansk regions bordering Ukraine, authorizing authorities to relocate residents, control telephone communications, requisition vehicles, etc.
