On August 8, a reception to celebrate the 57th anniversary of the founding of ASEAN was held in Guangzhou. The heads of the consular corps of ASEAN countries in Guangzhou, Consul General of the Republic of the Philippines in Guangzhou, Airi, and Deputy Director of the Foreign Affairs Office of the Guangdong Provincial People's Government, Qian Hongjie attended the event and delivered speeches.
According to iResearch, in 2022, China's total direct investment in ASEAN reached US$15.5 billion, injecting momentum into the development of infrastructure projects, high-tech innovation and green energy initiatives. Large Chinese companies such as Huawei, Alibaba, Tencent and BYD have brought technology, expertise and funds to ASEAN, contributing to the development of the industry. He stressed that tourism is also a bridge connecting the people of China and ASEAN. In the first half of 2023, ASEAN received about 46.5 million tourists, and China was the largest source of non-ASEAN tourists. Looking to the future, he said that the consulates general of ASEAN countries in Guangzhou will continue to play the role of bridges and ties, further promote exchanges and cooperation between Guangdong and ASEAN in more fields, and achieve mutual benefit and win-win results.
Qian Hongjie said that China and ASEAN countries are a community with a shared future, with the Maritime Silk Road connecting them and a long history of exchanges and mutual learning. In 2021, since the establishment of a comprehensive strategic partnership between China and ASEAN, the development momentum has been strong, and the two sides have been each other's largest trading partners for four consecutive years. 2024 is the China-ASEAN Cultural Exchange Year, which will witness the quality upgrade of China-ASEAN relations. Qian Hongjie emphasized that she looks forward to working with ASEAN countries to further strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation, deepen connectivity, actively carry out economic, trade and cultural exchanges, promote the building of a closer China-ASEAN community with a shared future, and inject new impetus into promoting an equal and orderly world multipolarization and inclusive economic globalization.
It is reported that in 2023, bilateral trade between China and ASEAN continued to grow, reaching 6.41 trillion yuan (911.7 billion U.S. dollars). ASEAN has maintained its position as my country's largest trading partner for four consecutive years, and my country has also been ASEAN's largest trading partner for many consecutive years. ASEAN's exports to China mainly include electronic products, agricultural products and resource products, and its imports from China mainly include machinery, electronic products and chemical products.
As the largest province in foreign trade in China, Guangdong plays an important role in the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and ASEAN. Since 2020, ASEAN has been Guangdong's largest trading partner for four consecutive years. In 2023, the total import and export volume between Guangdong and ASEAN reached US$191 billion (about RMB 1.37 trillion), accounting for more than 1/5 of the total import and export volume between China and ASEAN.
