At 19:37 on August 8, the Zhaitang Fire Rescue Station in Mentougou District received a dispatch from the city's 119 Command Center saying that two hikers were lost and trapped on a mountain 890 meters northeast of Sixhang Village in Mentougou District. The Zhaitang Fire Rescue Station dispatched one vehicle and seven people to the scene.
In fact, before the firefighters received the alarm, the Beijing Meteorological Department issued a yellow warning for heavy rain and a blue warning for strong winds at 15:00 on the 8th. The weather forecast mentioned that from 8:00 on the 9th to 8:00 on the 10th, Beijing will experience significant precipitation, and local rainfall in Mentougou and other places will exceed 100 mm. Secondary disasters such as mountain torrents and mudslides may also occur in mountainous areas.
"It was very anxious to rescue people during the yellow rainstorm warning. We thought that we must rescue people before the rainstorm comes." said a firefighter who participated in the rescue.
On the way, the firefighters contacted the trapped people who called the police and learned that they were a man and a woman from Beijing. They started hiking from Hebei at around 14:00 that day. At around 19:00, due to the late sky, they had poor visibility on the way down the mountain, and there was heavy fog in the mountains. They did not carry any lighting equipment, so they got lost and urgently needed rescue.
At 20:32, the firefighters arrived at the assembly point at the foot of the mountain. At 21:20, five firefighters and a guide carried rescue equipment and emergency food up the mountain to search for the trapped people.
After nearly two hours of arduous trekking, the rescuers reached the top of Jiushan Mountain at 23:03. Because there was no mobile phone signal on the top of the mountain, the firefighters contacted the trapped people through the satellite phone they carried with them and roughly confirmed their location.
Afterwards, the rescuers set out towards the location of the trapped person. Due to the heavy fog in the mountains at night and low visibility, the rescuers finally searched for nearly two and a half hours and found the trapped person at 1:20 the next day.
After meeting up with the trapped persons, the rescuers immediately provided food and water to the two trapped hikers. Upon questioning, the trapped persons stated that apart from being cold, they were in good physical condition and had no injuries.
After a brief rest, at around 2 o'clock, the rescuers escorted the trapped people down the mountain. As the fog in the mountains gradually became thicker and the road was muddy, in order to ensure the safety of the people, the rescuers could only slow down and move forward steadily on the way back.
At 6:45, after nearly 10 hours and nearly 16 kilometers of round-trip mountain roads, the rescuers successfully escorted the two trapped people down the mountain and successfully avoided the impending heavy rain.
"We were quite scared at the time. It was so dark and foggy, and there were many bushes around. We were worried that we would be attacked by wild animals. But we firmly believed that the firefighters would find us and take us down safely," said the trapped hiker afterwards.
